Hi everyone.

My mum and I have been showing my Aunty Barb how to make simple drawstring library bags to give to her grand children. She wants to fill them with books and goodies. A great kids present, even for holding toys to go to grandma's or for taking a change of clothes or swimmers. These are always great to use instead of wrapping paper too for birthdays, easter and christmas. Anyhow ......

Here is the bag we made this weekend.

Sewing a simple drawstring tote tutorial (for personal use, or for making bags to sell please dont sell this tutorial just redirect it here for people to share for free Smiley )

1. Cut 2 squares 17 inches by 17 inches. optional applique a design or name tag.
2  Use an overlocker to finish top edge and serge sides and bottom of bag. I f you dont have a serger you could think about lining the bag or doing french seams or straight stitch then zigzag seams to stop fraying.
3. Press bag and press top opening edge down about an inch to form a simple casing for your drawstring.
4. Sew this casing down ensuring you leave an opening at the side seam for the cord to fit.
5. Use a safety pin or bobbin to thread the cord through the casing, knot off, heat seal the cord to stop fraying if you want.

Its quick and easy. If you need any further help I have a quick video up on yt. Just follow my link in my signature. I  am a visual learner so find videos much easier.

thanks for looking and feedback is always welcome.
I hope to see what you all come up with.
I am thinking to make some for easter that my boys can use to store stuff in.

i have heard of insulbright and used it for making my own fabric lunchbags.
so far this has worked out pretty well for me keeping my water cool while i am out walking the dog or to the shops. i guess if you are planning on going for longer the insulbright would be good.
for my kids poppas for lunch i just make them out of face washers. i will do a tutorial on that soon.
we use eskies in our vehicles here in the tropics on longer trips and just get the water out when we leave the car
great to get feed back and thanks for your input. hope to see your water tote soon.
maybe we could start a coolwaterbottle sewalong? if there was interest in this? let me know. feel free to leave comments here or we could start a thread in the craftalong forum

Hi everyone I make water bottle totes for swaps and gifts and wanted to share how i make these.
I sew them from curtain remnants which are rubber backed as this recycles the fabric and creates insulation. I find it keeps my cold water cool and works well. I didnt use iron on waterproof inside as i only use them for water and things dry quickly in tropical cairns, queensland, australia.

Here are some photos showing details on how my tote looks
ribbon applique

ribbon tab for you keys or coin purse to clip on while you go walking the dog lol

squared off bottom

final close up

please feel free to make these totes for swaps gifts and you can sell them. just please dont sell my tutorial as this is my own work. Please refer people here to his tutorial thankyou.

sewing tutorial:
1 cut 2 rectangles to fit your size bottle. I cut mine 10.5 inch wide by 11 inch long.
2. cut and sew strap 3 inch wide as long as you want, i iron a 1/4 inch seam and then press together and top sew in half. I end up with about an inch wide strap which i find doesnt cut my shoulder as much.
3. applique your tote with ribbon or design.
4.pin the strap at top edge between both rectangles with right sides facing inside.
Then  sew the top seam.
5. With right sides together sew sides and bottom leaving a gap to turn through.
6 square off bottom corners and snip.
7. Turn bag through hole you left and press, top sew top edge.
optional you can add a pocket.
Enjoy your tote
(i will be editing my video to get a couple more photos for the steps and will add them here)

thanks for viewing and i hope you show and tell the totes you make.
