1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Removing fabric glue. on: March 11, 2006 08:26:31 PM
My wedding dress has two small embroidered appliques attached to the bottom.  I've been peeling them off because I want to replace them with ribbon bows, but some of the glue is still sticking to the fabric.  Is there a way to remove this glue (or an easier way to remove the appliques) besides just peeling it off without damaging the dress?  Would steam or an iron work, or is there a product made for removing fabric glue?
2  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Wedding dress dilemma: can this be done? on: February 10, 2006 02:56:22 PM
So here's my deal.  This is the top of my wedding dress.

But I think it looks ten trillion times better like this.

Is this possible for a seamstress to do?  My mom says that it will make it look weird and homemade, but I thought I'd get some opinions from people who sew.
3  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / Here's a brilliant idea for seating at an outdoor wedding! on: January 27, 2006 04:05:49 AM
So apparently renting chairs is really expensive, and I was trying to think of ways to get around it.  I thought about having everyone bring their own picnic blankets and spread them out, but we ran into the problem of some older or handicapped people not being able to sit on the ground, the blankets all clashing with the color scheme too much, etc.  We thought about having everyone bring their own lawnchairs but that was just downright tacky.  We're having a 1940s movie themed wedding and it just wouldn't fit.  We thought about covering benches with table clothes, but where to get benches?

Until finally some brides from another message board came up with this:  HAY BALES!  The rectangular ones you always see around Halloween and Thanksgiving.  They can be bought for as little as $2 each and can seat up to 3 people.  Even better, if you find a local farmer by using Craigslist or asking around or something, since you're only using them for sitting, they'll still be clean and edible and the farmer might even let you borrow them for free!

Now, what to do with them...if you're having any sort of country or backyard or autumn themed wedding, throwing some cheap burlap over the top would look nice.  Or for ANY theme or color scheme, someone briliiant came up with this idea:  cover the bales in fabric in your main wedding color, then tie some wide ribbon in your accent color around the bale to make it look like a present.  Is that the greatest idea ever or what?  You might not even have to buy fabric if you're not too anal about every single thing being the exact same shade of your wedding color...just go buy some .59 cent solid colored sheets from the thrift store, dye them and cut them into appropriate sized pieces for covering hay bales.  You can just hide the frayed edges under the bale.

4  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / The Green Fairy on: January 11, 2006 10:34:19 PM
There's been a lot of absinthe talk lately on this board so I wanted to share something I thought was neat.

I had these pictures of me taken 3 years ago but just now realized the coincidence when I said outloud, "I'm looking for my green fairy pictures." and thought, 'Hey, green fairy pictures...green fairy...haha!'

Wouldn't they make a neat label for an absinthe bottle or cover for a book about it or something?

5  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / We're the luckiest brides. on: September 18, 2005 12:00:33 PM
I thought of this trying on wedding dresses the other day...

I was at David's Bridal, and noticed some really cute hairpieces.  They were fabric roses attached to the end of a simple hairpin with a couple of pearls and sparkly beads arranged around the flower with jewelry wire, and you just stuck them in your hair in front of your veil.

I completely loved them, and figured I would get them just for fun, until I saw the price tag...$45 each!!!  And you needed three of them just to cover up your veil comb.  No wonder people's weddings end up costing $10,000 and $20,000.

Then I looked closely at the hair piece...it was a machine-made fabric rose hot glued to the end of a simple, common hairpin, and the beads were fake pearls and $6/pack Swarovski crystals on cheap gold jewelry wire.  So of course I promptly left, went to Hobby Lobby, bought the stuff and made my own.

Every girl getting married is lucky, but we're especially well-off...a creative mind saves thousands of dollars and our weddings end up more unique and beautiful in the end anyway!
6  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Any idea what this fabric is called? on: August 05, 2005 08:36:50 PM
I'm going to hire a seamstress to make my wedding dress, and I want it to be made out of this certain kind of fabric, but I can't find it anywhere in real life or the Internet.  It looks like corduroy but it isn't furry.  Here's a link to a pic of a dress made from it.

Please help if ya can.  Thanks.
7  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / My pink and black wedding on: June 29, 2005 08:17:51 PM
Hi!  This is my first post.  I'm on a budget for my wedding in April so I'm making most of the stuff.  It's going to be black and all shades of pink and it'll have a late 1940s theme.  I wish the pictures did these things justice.  I was suprised by my own creativity!

This is a black $2 picture frame that I glued pink pearls to.  The candles I got on sale for a few bucks.  The bride in the picture that I used for the example is my beautiful best friend Erin who got married last year.  She's on Craftster too- erindezeeuw.  On the table with the guestbook, we're going to have lots of black and white pictures of both of us in pretty pink and black frames I made with candles here and there and a little picture book I bought of famous 50s couples and quotes about love for people to look at when they're bored.

These are some combs I made for my bridesmaids or maybe for me.  They were super easy and cheap- each one took 20 minutes and less than a dollar to make.
