1  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Orange What's His Name on: February 13, 2009 11:55:35 AM
After watching the episode were Alton Brown makes his own knock off of the Orange Julius, I decided to try it myself.  I found a recipe online and made a few adjustments to make it extra orange-y.  Recipe below the pic.

My Recipe for an Orange Whats His Name

(makes about 2 servings)

6-8oz fresh squeezed orange juice (I think I squeezed 2 oranges)
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup water
2 tbs sugar (I used rounded, but this is more of a matter of taste)
1/2 tsp vanilla
5-6 ice cubes

Combine all ingredients in blender until nice and smooth.

Mind you, this recipe is pretty flexible. I wanted something like an Orange Julius but a bit stronger on the orange and less sweet. Im pretty happy with the results and hope to make it more often in the summer.
2  COOKING / Dessert / Cake: The Best Way to Apologize on: January 29, 2009 06:50:03 AM
The story goes like this:

I was playing Left 4 Dead with two friends of mine. During the level that takes place in a hospital, we found ourselves holding our own in a supply closet as the zombie hoard rushed at us. In the excitement, I realized that I had molotov cocktail in my inventory. I threw it into the hall at the zombies and got all proud of myself as they burned away. Next thing I know I hear my friends voice through the computer, AHHHHH!!!! Im on FIRE! Sure enough, his character ran into the hallway covered in flames. What are you doing?! he cried.

Then it dawned on me. Not only was his character on fire, but all of us were. I looked down at my health meter as it began to plummet. Problem was, the whole thing struck me as being really funny. I didnt even think for a second that the game would be clever enough to realize that the zombies werent the only flammable thing in the immediate area. Woops!

Not wanting to cause any hard feelings, I showed up with this when I went to his house the next day:

I am happy to report that I was forgiven right away.
3  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Chinese Chicken and Veggies Recipe? on: April 03, 2008 06:13:35 AM
I love to get chicken and mixed vegetables from my local chinese place.  It has a nice thick clear-ish sauce and the veggies are crisp while the chicken is tender.  I need to start restricting salt in my diet, so I am trying to find a way to make something like this at home so I can control what goes into it a little better.  I'm sure cornstarch would be involved, but I'm not sure when to put it in?  Before or after the veggies are simmered in the broth?

If anyone has a recipe they could share, or suggestions on how to make it, I would really appreciate it!
4  Halloween / Halloween Decor and Parties / Halloween Mini-Cakes (with pics!) on: October 30, 2006 07:40:47 AM
I made these little cakes for a Bake-off I am having with a co-worker.  The inside cake is pumpkin spice and the frosting is cream cheese based.  The deorations themselves are make with gum-paste, but I think I might try fondant or something else next time.  As I've never worked with fondant before, is there anyone who can tell me which is better for forming little figures and such?

5  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Bubonic, The Plague of the Seas (stuffed pirate mouse) on: August 22, 2006 08:59:26 AM
I finished and sold this little trouble-maker last night.  Thankfully, he has now given up his life of crime and will instead be a desk ornament at a local veterinary clinic.

I wish the pics could be a little better, but he has an anchor on his eye patch and a gold tooth.

6  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Discussion and Questions / setting for loose topaz on: January 16, 2006 08:01:07 AM

My boyfriend went on a cruise and brought me back some really nice blue topaz.  The problem is that they are loose stones.  I was kinda bummed because I was hoping they were earrings.  I need to fine some settings or something to put them in, but Firemountain Gems does not carry square settings.  Does anyone know of any sites that carry similar items?

  Thanks for your help.
7  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Fraggle Rock Swap on: January 11, 2006 12:22:05 PM

I just got the first season of Fraggle Rock for Christmas.  It was so great to remember how much I loved it as a kid.  I even remembered a ton of the song lyrics.

I was thinking that a Fraggle Rock themed swap might be a lot of fun, or we can open it up to other muppet characters if that's what people are more interested in.  Just think of the possibilities- plush radishes, cute little cave creatures, postcards from Uncle Travelling Matt.

  Anyone interested?
8  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Please post your best costume... on: September 07, 2005 07:35:31 AM
I thought it might be helpful if we have a thread deicated to people showing off their favorite costumes.  It can be a nice one stop place to see other people's ideas and maybe help some of us think of some good ones for ourselves.  Sadly, my computer crashed and I don't have all my favorite pics...but here is my costume from last year.  I'm Nibbler from Futurama, and that's my boyfriend as Space Ghost.

This year I'm working on a bunch of different costumes for various parties and fairs, maybe I'll post more as the events come up.

Come on everyone, show off your hard work!
9  CLOTHING / Sewing Pattern Reviews / mandarin collar pattern? on: August 04, 2005 08:40:10 AM

I'm sorta new to sewing, but I would love a shirt with a mandarin collar.  I've found a few patterns, but I was wondering if anyone could reccommend a pattern that is pretty easy.  I'd feel a bit beter if I know someone has tried it before.
