1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / Re: Making my own cake- am I crazy?? on: September 23, 2010 09:18:12 PM
Pretty and elegant wedding cake, I like it!
And that Gordon train is AMAZING! You should be taking props for the rest of your life for that one  Shocked

I'm so glad I'm not the only one! What kinds of cake are you having? Mine will be mud on the bottom, then my layer will be coconut raspberry, and I haven't decided on the top yet. Matcha would be fun, but not sure if the fiancee will roll with green cake at his wedding. I'm prefecting my raspberry coconut recipe at the mo, heaps of fun and heaps of saturated fats being shared around the office  Wink

Hi all, I haven't been on the boards for ages, but with my wedding coming up in March I think it's time to step back into the fold!
So, I've hosted a lot of parties in my time, and I'm a crafty DIY demon, so organising the wedding is not phasing me the way it does for most noncrafters. I've hosted many a party that involved complete reworkings of decor, all the catering plus costumes etc

So, I know what I want for the wedding cake, and I'm really struggling right now with the idea of paying a baker $400-500 for something I can do myself. I'll be doing something like this http://www.marthastewartweddings.com/photogallery/50-great-cakes#slide_45

As well as my own baking skills, 2 of my bridesmaids are handy with a stick of butter and some sugar, and have some experience in making celebration cakes. When I've talked of it though, most people have reared back in horror at the idea, and keep telling me I'll have too much else to do. The women at work started talking of having a collection to pay for a baker so I won't do it. But the baking would be done a week ahead and frozen, which I need to do to dowel it anyway. I'll probably even buy the base layer as the DH wants chocolate mud, and in Oz the Cheesecake shop do an excellent mud cake and will ice it for you for under $100. That's how my cousin did his cake last year. I just don't like mud or I'd get the whole thing from there
The decorating yes, the day before, but it would be white chocolate ganache (bugger fondant) and then glueing the confetti with decorator's glue.

so, especially those who've been there, am I crazy? It seems to me that the lead up to a party where I don't even have to cater seems a little relaxing, and I'd have helpers and it's something I enjoy

I agree, go for it now, but don't rush to hard. I've had a long lead up as well, so I've gone through spurts where I've worked on it, then packed it away so I'm not tired of the project and style by the time the wedding comes up. And of course I won't start making it until about 3 months ahead in case I gain/lose weight and have to alter it- nightmare!
I love the back on your doodle, elegant

I  don't have the apron or the teatowel, but like you I recently found cmc_aus' panel in my WIP pile  Embarrassed
So don't tick me off yet (that sounds bad) I'll send it off asap
Have i actually embroidered librarylass' teatowel? I can't even remember! I may have got it first, but wouldn't it be my last thing??
7  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Re: continental v.s. English methods? on: November 10, 2007 09:45:11 PM
I taught myself continental after years of throwing and I love it. Especially for rib. Watching me breeze through K1P1 rib has inspired several fellow knitters to try the other way. But i don't know about right or left handed knitting- I think it's just best to find which way works for you
I've never had issues with pearl (tho when I first switch I had some loose tension problems which I've fixed)
Tinkerbellforever I'm so impressed you've been knitting backwards the whole time! I can't get my head around it- I wish I'd just tried it before muscle memory made it hard to change  Tongue
