Thank you so much for the nice comments everyone! This was one of the first times that I didn't follow a pattern for knitting, but just took a stich and went with it, so I was pretty nervous about it. But I'm happy with the turn out, and I hope my cousin will be too!

I need some help on a present for my boyfriend. (not for christmas...i'm not that much of a procrastinator! ) He really likes the show 'Roseanne' and while i was watching it the other day, I realized that a great gift for him would be to make the afghan that lays across the couch in the show. (http://popwatch.ew.com/photos/uncategorized/151231__blanket_l.jpg) Now, I'm a knitter, but I have crocheted before. Would this blanket be entirely too hard for an inexperienced crocheter? Also, does anyone know where I would be able to find a pattern to base this blanket off of?

Hi all!

Does anyone know of any books or websites that focus on historic knitting patterns? Also, maybe resources that give modern translations of older patterns? I am really interested in projects from the past, specifically civil war era patterns, but I am having a hard time finding them. And the ones that I have found (ex. 'The Workwoman's Guide' from 1840), are very confusing to translate into modern knitting terms. (and they have no images of the items.) Thanks for any help!

Use wool.  I like Shelridge Farms for mens socks.  Its cushy, yet warm and absorbant.  But mainly,  use wool.

My dad and brother are going on a hiking trip and I thought it would be nice to knit them a pair of hiking socks. I asked them and they said they just need something thick, warm and comfortable.

Anyone have a pattern for men's hiking socks?
If not, anyone have suggestions or tips on making sure the sock is nice and thick?
I'm not really sure what type of yarn to use, any suggestions?

So I already know what I want to make for my boyfriend for Christmas, but I need help in actually making it. So here's my idea: He's really into history, majoring in history and such. I want to make him a collage/collection/whatever thing of all the places that have meant something to him. I want to get old postcards/pictures/memorabilia from his hometown, college town, etc. and create some sort of collage of them all. Now...I am not good at scrap booking or anything of the sort, so this is where you guys come in. I need help on how to display this stuff. I originally thought of framing it all, which i still like that idea but I have no idea how i would make it look nice or whatever. Then I thought maybe I should create some sort of book with it all in it and then maybe leave blank pages at the end for him to put more in for the next step of his life...
anyway, if you guys have any ideas of how i could organize this all or pictures of similar projects, I would be greatly appreciative!!

Alright, so this may be a silly question, but I would like help with it none the less. So, we have to get our own recycling bins in the town we just moved in to, so we have this large storage bin that we're using from k-mart. Anyway, I want to somehow put in separaters so that i can have a place to put different colors of glass, so that it's easier for the recycling man. Is there anything that i could put in that wouldn't be ruined from rain and would keep sturdy that would solve this problem?
