I just came across this tutorial - wow, totally awesome - just wanted to chime in and say you don't necessarily need to toss that iron into the "what do I do with THIS" pile if some of the plastic melts onto it ... you can probably remove the melted plastic from the iron - worth a try, so give it a try.

Wait until the iron has cooled, then rub the mess with a rag that has been soaked in nail polish remover.  Scrape it off with a wooden spatula (don't use metal or you will scratch the iron)  Make sure to wipe the iron with water before using it again.
