1  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Discussion and Questions / Re: God, please help me solder before I freak.... on: April 29, 2006 05:33:18 PM
I do clean it often - after nearly every pass.

I saw that tutorial before and I think that maybe my iron is too hot for what I'm doing?  Or am I pressing too hard with the tip??
2  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Discussion and Questions / God, please help me solder before I freak.... on: April 29, 2006 12:06:42 PM
I'm trying to solder those damn microscope slide things and here is my issue:

I have a 40watt iron.  With both the chisel tip and the pointed tip, the tips either crack or wear down after I use them for awhile (not long, tho). When I talked to the guys at the electronics store, they thought that was odd and was convinced it was because I was touching the solder to the iron.  (They said for motherboards you only heat up the area, then you place the solder which should melt)

Help me. I'm sick of this.  It's freaking hard to get the solder smooth and I'm having a hard time with the whole tip thing.

What sort of iron do you all use?   Do you touch the solder to the tip of the iron?  Has your tips ever cracked?

For some reason, this whole project has become more expensive and more frustrating than I thought possible.
3  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Re: postage stamp necklaces... (tutorial added.) on: April 29, 2006 11:25:46 AM
I'm really needing some help on this...

Ok, so I'm using a 40 watt iron and all my tips are either thinning if they're a straight point or splitting if they're chisel tips.  Anyone know why?

The guys at the electronics place say it's because i'm touching the solder to the iron and i should just be using the iron to heat the place, then place the solder.  Ok, that sounds fine if you're working on a motherboard, but I don't think, based on the tutorial here and elsewhere, that is how we do it.  At least, I don't get any results when I do that.

Help!

I'm about ready to toss this project because of the issues.  It just sucks.  Sad

5  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Discussion and Questions / Re: composition notebook with **blank** pages?? on: July 06, 2005 08:10:25 AM
Moleskine has books the same size and similar feel to composition notebooks with unlined pages.  The pages are buff colored, though, and the cover is oilcloth bound, which comes in black or buff.

Here is a pic:  http://moleskine.us/cahier-xl-plain.html

I have recently bought two sets of three notebooks like these.   Ebay is a GREAT place to get the best prices on these!
6  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Discussion and Questions / Moleskine Japanese Book - need ideas!! on: July 06, 2005 08:04:55 AM
I recently bought a Moleskine Japanese Book, which has accordian pages.  It's so beautiful and seems ripe for something exciting.

But what?

I swear by Uhu is not too pricey, but its really smooth and holds well and is acid free and all that jazz.

Another vote for UHU!  Love it, love it, love it.
