I finished my choker for nasty_wench!  It was my origional idea.  I started a second idea (kind of a flop) so I went with my first idea and I love it!  Have to make one for me now!

18  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Re: Want to go vegan, but have allergies on: April 06, 2007 08:57:28 PM
My Mom is vegan and thought she was alergic to soy because she felt terrible after eating tofu or soy milk.  She avoided it for a long time.  She has discovered (as have others i've talked to since) that while the above products plus soy ice cream and soygurt have a bad effect, firmented soy items, soy sauce, tempeh and miso are fine and she eats them often.  Ofcourse check with your Doctor to see if experimenting is safe for you.
Even with no soy if you feel being vegan is right for you, go for it!  I love rice milk the best and there is frozen rice dream plus a new brand of frozen rice treat called 'Good karma' delish!  I think Rice dream makes pudding cups too.
There are a lot of books out there but vegan outreach.org has a great fat pamphlet called 'Guide to cruelty free eating' that is the most excellent one I've seen.  Good luck!
19  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Re: Giving tempeh a second shot on: April 06, 2007 06:27:08 PM
There are some really good recipes, including a basic 'braised tempeh' in 'The Native Foods restaurant cookbook' great book!

Also, I make a yummy un-tuna salad with it.  First, steam the tempeh 20 min. and let cool.  crumble up really fine and ad:
veganaise
red onion
parsley
sweet pickle relish (lots!)
season how you like it!

Also you can steam, crumble and sautee it spiced up for taco filling, lots of cumin and chili powder, yum!

Is there a whole foods near you?  They have a computer that you can look up 'wheat free bread' and such on.   Look for rice noodles and quinoa pasta (sometimes it is mixed with corn so look out)  quinoa (KEEN-WA) is a good grain that can be cooked at a side dish.  There are a lot of good flax and rice crackers out there too.
