41  CROCHET / Crochetalongs / Crochetalong Cleanup on: April 25, 2013 06:35:55 AM
Hi Craftster Crocheters!  I wanted to give a heads up that the Crochetalong board is undergoing a cleanup.  You may see the following changes:

---Crochetalongs that have not been active for 1 year are being labeled DORMANT.  If a DORMANT Crochetalong becomes active again, then the DORMANT title label will be removed.  Also, DORMANT Crochetalongs that have pattern or pattern links within them will have that denoted in the title.

---If you would like to restart a DORMANT Crochetalong anew, send me, pinkleo, and I'll make sure a link is added to DORMANT one to direct people your way. Grin (Note: if this happens, the DORMANT along will be labeled as CLOSED)

---Crochetalongs that are old, with no patterns/links, have no/very few replies, and with no images are being cleaned out.  Also, those Crochetalongs that do have links, but the links are no longer active or worse lead to virus/spam Tongue will be cleaned up.

---Crochetalongs that are labeled CLOSED are either those Crochetalongs that the organizer has closed or is a Crochetalong that was for a limited time (i.e. crocheting for a certain event that is no longer active).

If you have any questions, don't hesitate in PMing your Crochet Mods. Grin
42  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Craftalongs / Discussion Thread for Summer Nerd Games on: April 02, 2013 11:04:19 AM

Welcome to the Summer Nerd Games Planning Arena!
I, pinkleo, shall be your host and Head Gamemaker.

I am so happy that alwaysinmyroom has allowed me to open up a discussion thread about the upcoming Summer Nerd Games.  As many of you know, I run the popular Harry Potter Craftalong (HPC).  And I have had many Craftster Peeps contacting me, telling me they wished they had something like that for their love.  Well, I decided to take the idea of the HPC and apply it to the whole Nerdyverse.  Here is the plan...

The Summer Nerd Games welcomes all players from the Nerdyverse to come and play!  The games are to inspire, encourage, and motivate your crafting adventure.
They will run mid-May to mid-Sept.  And players can join anytime during the games.

Are you wondering if you are part of the Nerdyverse?   I think John Green describes quite well...
“…nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff… Nerds are allowed to love stuff, like jump-up-and-down-in-the-chair-can’t-control-yourself love it. ...when people call people nerds, mostly what they’re saying is ‘you like stuff.’ Which is just not a good insult at all. Like, ‘you are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness’.”  ...I think we are all part of the Nerdyverse. Cool

Rules of Engagement
--There will be a list of challenges, for you to complete. (Please see HPC for examples.)
--You complete a challenge with crafty item you think fulfills it; you can use your description to make it clear on how craft fits challenge prompt.
--Players must craft to the best of their abilities and have a minimum of 30 minutes of crafting time per submission.
--A project can only be submitted for one challenge (the same project cannot be entered in multiple categories) unless noted in prompt (it will be CLEARLY noted if allowed).
---A project does NOT have to be "nerdy" to fit a challenge; it only has to fulfill the prompt as you see it.
--Challenges must be started & completed during the Summer Nerd Games, unless otherwise noted.
--There will be SO MUCH to do in the Summer Nerd Games.  Do not feel like you have to craft everything.  Do what inspires you.
--We welcome all players from the Nerdyverse, no matter their Geekdom.
--We are never mean.
--We never exclude someone.
--We will keep it cleanish (PG13).
--We will follow all Craftster guidelines, this includes staying on-topic (serious OT goes in FOC OT boards).
--Before playing, you must declare your Geekdom (Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Star Trek, Star Wars, zombies, etc.).  If you jump-up-and-down-in-the-chair-can’t-control-yourself love it, then that is your Geekdom. Cool
--Never hesitate in contacting Head Gamemaker pinkleo with your questions, concerns, or ideas.

For the Summer Nerd Games, you can play Solo (aka Ninja Style) or as a Team.

About Teams
---Teams are where like-minded players join to work together.
---A team must declare their Geekdom.  A few examples are Doctor Who, Tolkien Science, Big Bang Theory, Harry Potter, Buffy, comics, zombies, musicals, Disney, medieval, Sherlock Holmes, horror, My Little Ponies, gamers, Fraggles, 80s, Hunger Games, Muppets, Monty Python, steampunks, Tim Burton, chocolate, Jane Austen, recyclers, owls, trees, cats, Stephen King, dystopia, and mystery.
--Someone must be declared Team Captain before a team can be officially formed.  You may have more than one captain for your team.  Team Captains are needed just as a point of contact for anyone wanting to join a team, and they should be cheerleaders for there teams as well (All  teammates should be cheerleaders for their team).
--You can start building your teams now! Grin  Team Captains need to PM pinkleo when wanting to start their team so it can be listed in the Official Nerd Games Team Roster.  Once a Team Captain(s) is listed, then the Team Captain(s) can either list in the thread or PM additions to their team.
--There is no limit to the number of people in a team.
--Once a team is formed, you cannot deny entry to anyone who wants to join.

Preview of Point System
You can earn 10 Bonus Points for the following...
--Discovery: A new technique or material.
--Engineering: New Tutorial, Pattern, or Recipe posted on Craftster Boards
--Giver: Charity Projects
--Fandom: Inspired by the Nerdyverse (must be clearly noted) with Super Bonus +5pts more for project being your declared geekdom
You may earn more than one set of bonus points for your project.

Research Projects taking 3-4weeks will earn 100 points.  Research Projects must be submitted for approval so that Gamemakers can track timeline and encourage your successful completion.  You will detail what your plan is and how it will take the allotted time to complete.  If your Research Project is a surprise, such as swap project, you may submit your Research Plan to the Head Gamemaker.

Monthly Challenges will earn 30 points.  Possible categories..Textbook (math, sciences, etc.), Multimedia (TV, Movies, Music), Culture (Fandom Based), Wordy (books, wordplay, poetry), Randomizer (like it says, random), Battle Royale

At the End Game, there will be Winners (but really no losers)
--Team Winners (average taken from number of players & point scored)
--Ninja Winners (for this section, I will be including all players, solo & team, for Ninja Awards)
--Special Awards (given by gamemakers)
Winnings will include bragging rights, badges, and possible prizes.

In Search of...
--Co-Gamemakers: Helping hand in the thread (answer questions and inspire), can head up division (i.e. Discovery, Research, Engineering, Culture, Textbook, Multimedia)
--Badgemakers: Those who are skilled in the art of pic manipulation and willing to create badges and avatars.
--Brainstormers: Help come up with challenge & game ideas.  PM them to your Head Gamemaker, pinkleo.  See Categories for inspiration.
If interested PM pinkleo

So...what do you think?  Any ideas?  I would love to hear from you!  I want our games to be tons of fun and super crafty! Grin

Harry Potter Craftalong ~Spring Semester 2013~

~*Began March 1, 2013*~
~*Ended May 31, 2013*~

Spring Semester lasted 91 days
30 Students were enrolled at Hogwarts
362 Projects were Posted.

That is an amazing average of around 4 projects a day and 12 projects per student!

Welcome to Hogwarts!
The Harry Potter Craftalong (HPC) is not your typical craftalong; we are gathered here to celebrate our love of crafting and the Wonderful World of Harry Potter.  In the HPC you will be completing classes and challenges with your skills in crafty magic.  These classes and challenges all have HP centered themes, but your crafts do not have to be “Harry Potter."  Your mission, as a student at Hogwarts, is to complete at least one class or challenge during this semester.  You may join any time during the semester.  I hope you join us; the HPC is a great way to stretch your crafty muscles, meet HP crafters, and have fun!

~*HPC PROJECTS*~
---The HPC is here to help us each finish projects and to explore new challenges as we better our crafting skills.  Prompts and guidelines are there to help stimulate creativity and growth; the size and complexity of the project submitted should reflect a level of personal growth and challenge over the time you spend in the HPC.
---Projects for the HPC should represent your best crafty skills.  Take pride in your work.  Classes and challenges should take a minimum of 30 minutes to make.
---A project can only be submitted for one class/challenge (the same project cannot be entered in multiple categories) unless noted in prompt (it will be CLEARLY noted if allowed).
---Projects must be turned in within the timeframe designated by the type of assignment or challenge.
---For a project to be counted, it must have a picture or picture link included.  If your item is a private piece, you may submit a picture link to one of the headmistresses.
---There is SO MUCH to do in the HPC.  Do not feel like you have to craft everything.  Think of the HPC as a "Choose Your Own Adventure".  Craft what inspires you, but don't try to do everything and get burned out.  Keep in mind the wise words of Deputy Headmistress jennieingram, "It does not do to dwell on lists and forget to craft."

~*HOW TO TURN IN A PROJECT*~
For each assignment/challenge, use this header:
Class/Challenge/House Pride:
House:
Project Name:
Project Page Link (if available):
Brief Description: (how it fits the requirements, pattern/techniques/recipe used, any fun tips, etc.)
Project Picture:
Feel free to also include your house and any storycrafting you've created for your project.
---You can add more than one project to your post, but a header must be used for each project.

~*HPC FAQs*~
---How long is a semester?  Semesters are as follows: FALL-September, October, November; WINTER- December, January, February; SPRING-March, April, May; SUMMER-June, July, August
---When can I join?  You can join anytime in the semester.
---Do I have to sign-up to join this craftalong? No, all you have to do is post in the thread a hi or completed project post.
---How do I complete a semester/earn my year? To complete a semester/year, you only have to complete one class or challenge during the semester.
---What timezone do we use?  We use Headmistress pinkleo's Central Timezone (Texas time).
---Do you sort me?  NO, you will decide which house you belong to, but you can only choose one.
---I have a problem or question; who can I ask?  You can send a Personal Message (PM) to Headmistress pinkleo.  You can also ask specific questions to HPC staff.  And you can post your question in the thread; our students are very helpful!
---Can I turn in something I did earlier? With a very few exceptions the answer is NO!  You must complete your project during the current semester. Exceptions are Detention and OWLs; look for details about these projects in their information posts.
---Are we swapping? No, this is not an organized swap.  We are just encouraging crafting with a HP twist.  But if you enjoy swapping, keep an eye out for HP themed swap info in our thread.
---Do I have to craft all the classes and challenges? NO, you pick what you inspires you.  There is tons to choose from so choose your own HP Craft Adventure through the castle.
---What kind of projects are allowed for classes/challenges? If Craftster has a category for it, then it is a viable HPC project.  And since Craftster has a board for almost everything, your choices are vast.
---Does my craft project have to be Harry Potter themed? NO, if your item fulfills the class/challenge prompt, then it can be posted in the HPC.  Above all, we are here to encourage crafting.
---What is the Magic Quill?  Ah, you must have heard about that from your headmistress.  She is referring to updating the completed project list by using the tinyurl website.

~*House Points*~
~*Your triumphs will earn you points*~
Points System
15 points for a Class Assignment & Challenge*
100 points for OWLs
150 points for NEWTs
10 points extra for SPEW aka Charity Items

House Points Guidelines
--- *You cannot double dip for Class & Challenge points.  For example, if you turn-in a project for Herbology & Geminio, then you would get 2 badges but only 15 points for the project.
---You cannot get credit for a class or challenge twice.  For example, if you turn in 2 Alchemy projects, then you will only get points for the first one.
--- SPEW points are extra credit.  You can earn SPEW points for each project you turn in if it goes to charity.  You do not have to give the charity's name, just that you are donating to a certain cause.  (I happen to know that some Battered Women's Shelters don't like their names/locations posted.) SPEW projects must be clearly marked with SPEW to earn extra points.  I suggest adding it to your header.  Also, SPEW project can be turned in as stand-alone projects; they will earn 10 points.  Unlike most projects, you can turn in more than one PEW project for points.
---HPC Challenge Points do not include House Challenges.  For Example, a Gryffindor Lion-along project would not count for points unless it also fulfills a HPC Class or HPC Challenge.
--- To determine House Cup Winner, an average from the points accumulated per house and the number of members per house.  If there is a tie, then more than one house will win the cup.  Note, a House Member is someone who has turned in at least 1 project.
--- Don't stress over House Points, but do craft your personal best. (This varies from person to person.  And I'm not really worried about "crafting your best" bit because HPCers are amazing crafters!)

45  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Completed Projects / Chocolate Sugar Scrub ~quick & easy~ on: February 09, 2013 01:20:44 PM
For Valentine's Day, I'm making some Chocolate Sugar Scrub.  It is quick and easy, and you probably have most of the ingredients in your pantry right now.

Ingredients:
5 Tablespoons cocoa
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sugar (I used brown sugar here)
1/2 cup oil (I used olive oil)

Mix ingredients together, and put in jars.  *To Use: Rub a small amount onto skin and rinse. Do remember that oils make a bath/shower slippery.

....looked so lushly serene in first pic that I wanted to show that scrubbiness...

You could add essential oils and scents like cinnamon, mint, almond, ginger to change it up a bit.

Hope you find this useful!  ENJOY! Grin
46  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Seven Hearts Bookmark ~*free pattern link*~ on: February 04, 2013 12:33:07 PM
I thought would share with all my fellow hookers a pattern that would make a fab Valentine's Day present.

Free Pattern Link: Heart Bookmark by Lisa Hamblin from Crochet 'N' More
Yarn I Used: Fingering Weight, Lion Brand Sock-Ease Marshmallow and Bamboo & Ewe Red
Hook I Used: D Hook
Modification I Made: Added additional hearts to make longer
Note: Needs Blocking!

Also, this pattern works up quickly; I whipped this one up during the Super Bowl.

Thanks for peeking! Grin

~*This swap is IYP aka Invite Your Partner.

A little about IYPs (Thank you previous IYP organizers for fab description! Kiss)
In this swap, you can contact anyone and ask them to be your partner. It's almost like a personal swap, but with a group, and a killer gallery! You will have to sign up with your partner. That is, you must contact your potential partner via pm and you both must mutually agree to be partnered together. Once you have a partner, each of you must pm me with your information, and after doing all the necessary double checking, I will post you both together as participants and add this swap to your "In progress" feedback.

If you want to participate, but you are a bit shy of just asking someone, you can PM me and you'll be put on a list of "Peeps Searching for Partners" in the next post, so people can choose from craftsters that are interested.

It is a little scary to ask someone to be your partner. Some people may have someone else already in mind, or they may not have the time or funds to participate right now, or they may just not be interested. We need to remember to be nice if we feel we need to refuse someone, and to not take it personally if someone else turns us down.

Once you have your partner, fill out the below questionnaire and send to organizer.
(Remember to send your info to the organizer via Private Message (PM) and not to reply with it here)

QUESTIONNAIRE TO ANSWER:
Name of swap: OAHPT
Craftster username:
Email address:
Your real name:
Mailing address including the country (as it should appear for shipping please):
Confirm that are at least 16 years old or, if not, that you have moderator approval (yes/no):
My OAHPT Partner is:

Remember to read the Swap Info Guide and Swap FAQs before participating in a swap.

Note about Personal Messages (PMs) to Organizer: Please label PMs to organizer with title of "OAHPT".

Note about Communication: For a wonderful swap experience, communication is the key.  Please keep in touch with your partner.  Further, it would be nice if you would post in this thread at least once a week (you could just stop in for a quick hello.....or if on holiday or will be without internet access or anything of the such, just post a message....it gives your partner and organizer warm fuzzy feelings to know you are still around).

Notes about Sending, Receiving, and Feedback
  • SENDING: Take pictures of your items before you send.  When sending, you must use a DC# (or for overseas keep that receipt). Keep your receipt until your partner receives.  PM organizer and partner when you send.
  • RECEIVING: PM organizer and partner when you receive.  Take pictures of received items. (Please take quality pictures, like ones you would take of your work.)  Post pictures in gallery in a timely manner.
  • FEEDBACK: Given when a package is received (verified through PM or DC#) Detailed feedback will be given.  Examples: Sent Early or Lack of Communication: No PMs of Sending/Receiving.

--- Don't stress over House Points, but do craft your personal best (This varies from person to person.  And I'm not really worried about "crafting your best" bit because HPCers are amazing crafters!
