I would like try my hand at crocheting an amigurumi, so a beginner pattern for any animal would be awsome!!  Failing that, a knitted surprise would be wicked!

Favourite colours: blues, purples, greens
Preferred yarn types (e.g. wool, acrylic, cotton, etc.): cotton, soft wool (see below), alpaca, cashmere; can't wear itchy yarn

DETAILS OF SWAP
This is the Handspun & Handcrafts Swap!! This swap will pair up spinners and non-spinners (hereafter referred to as crafters, not because spinners are not crafters, but to keep things simple), to swap handspun and other crafts with each other.  Spinners will make beautiful yarn for their partners and Crafters will make beautiful crafts for their partners.  Smiley  Please discuss with your partner to determine level of effort: as a general guideline, spinners will make a skein of yarn for their partner, and crafters will make one large and 2 small items for their partner (of course, both a "skein" and a "large/small item" are really relative terms, which is why you need to communicate with your partner). You can do more than this of course if you both agree to do so.

You will sign up either as a Spinner OR a Crafter, please use the appropriate questionnaire below.

If more crafters than spinners sign up, the swap will be limited to the number of spinners (and vice-versa). Participants will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis (sign up early!).

I am anticipating that there will be more crafters sign up than spinners. Therefore, spinners who have successfully completed at least one swap may choose to take two partners if desired, and crafters will be limited to one partner, to ensure that more people get a chance to participate.

13  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Searching for post on Knitting Books? on: September 30, 2006 08:48:35 AM
A while ago there was a thread on the topic of "favourite knitting books" or "knitting book suggestions/reccommendations" or "what is on your knitting library shelves"... something like that. People were posting lists of their favourite knitting books.

I've been doing searches and can't find that thread... can anyone help me? I even posted in that thread, so I can't beleive I can't find it! arrgh. It doesn't help my searches that my slowie modem takes about 5 min to load a page.

thanks!  Smiley
14  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / My Craft for Your Handspun Yarn? on: September 15, 2006 10:27:12 AM
I lovelovelove the yarns I see the spinners posting here on craftster... and I can't spin myself. And, I've also noticed that many, if not most of the "ongoing wishlist" swap wishlists include handspun yarn as a wish.

What about a swap to match up spinners and non-spinners? Anyone interested?
15  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / (Old) First Sweater - To Frog or not to Frog?? on: September 14, 2006 08:51:56 AM
So, about 5 years ago I finished my first sweater... it was a basketweave, drop-shoulder baggy style in Shetland Chunky. It is HUGE (gauge? what gauge?) and I don't think I have ever worn it - maybe once or twice around the house.

Now, I have fondness for this sweater since it is the first big thing I ever knit and so has a lot of sentimental value, and it also took me years, literally, to make and I learned a lot white making it.  However, it is huge and taking up space; I never wear it; and I can't think of anyone who would want it. It occurred to me that I could just frog it and make something else, but I'm not sure if I want to do that since it's kind of a sentimental garment. I might miss it if I frogged it, and regret doing it!

Has anyone else ever been in this situation??  Huh

Details of swap:
This is the MAGIC YARN BALL SWAP!!  You will send your partner a project kit consisting of a one-skein pattern and yarn of corresponding weight/length for the pattern. The really fun part is that you will first make the yarn into a "magic yarn ball."  This means that you re-wind the yarn yourself, hiding little trinkets and treats inside the yarn as you go.  Some ideas already suggested include tiny toys; candy; crafting supplies; jewelry; etc.
A good description of a Magic Yarn Ball is here:  http://whipup.net/2006/04/25/kids-yarn-project-the-magic-wool-ball/.

Since we're all crafty people, it goes without saying that we should craft some of the treats ourselves. I suggest, as a guideline, 15-20 things in the yarn ball and 4-5 of them be small crafts made by yourself.

When you sign up, let your partner know if you already know what you want the yarn for ("I would like yarn so I can make the MagKnits Sophie Bag"); or, if you have a general idea ("I would like yarn and a pattern for a felt handbag"); or, if you just want a surprise pattern. If you have more than one idea for a pattern, feel free to give your partner a choice of patterns to choose from.

A few notes:
- this is for one-skein or one-ball projects. However, if you want to arrange with your partner to do projects that take more than one yarn ball, you can jointly decide to do that if you both want to do so.
-please don't ask your partner to supply you with a photocopied pattern from a book (which is against copyright). There are tons of free patterns out there online- this is a great opportunity to get that special yarn for an online project you've been meaning to try. Or, you can ask your partner for the yarn to go with a pattern in a book that you already own.

18  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Magic Yarn Ball Swap? on: July 19, 2006 06:57:50 AM
I found this website about a "magic yarn ball" and thought it would be a great swap (it is also being done as a swap elsewhere on the web). What do y'all think?

http://whipup.net/2006/04/25/kids-yarn-project-the-magic-wool-ball/

Basically, you take a ball/skein of yarn, unwind it, and wind it back up, hiding little presents in the ball as you go. Isn't that a fun idea?
19  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Baby booties that keep the baby booted? on: June 02, 2006 06:13:08 PM
I have a baby bootie pattern that I love: they look great and are easy to whip up. However, after making many pairs as gifts, one mother told me that she can't use them because they fall off the baby's feet (i.e., are totally useless).

Does anyone have any recommendations for baby bootie patterns that STAY on their little feet? I'm surrounded by babies, and booties are such a nice little gift to whip up that it would be nice to have a pattern for booties that look cute and are actually functional as well.

thanks!  Smiley
20  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Ongoing Craft Supply Swap? on: May 26, 2006 10:37:12 AM
The ongoing swaps seems to be doing really well (i.e ongoing wish list swap; ongoing fabric swap; ongoing book swap, etc.). What about an ongoing swap where people could post a list of the crafty supplies they have that they no longer want? Could be a great way to recycle crafty supplies, get rid of stuff you no longer want, and get some new stuff that you would actually use.

thoughts?
