I'm thinking of either yarn or possibly hemp cord.

I did a sunrise on the side of my canvas shoes with a simple split stitch.  Had to use a thicker needle & it took a little extra effort but it really looks cute.

Anybody have any tips with working on wood?  I have a piece of old fence (3' by 4') that I'm going to attempt to cross-stitch.  I figure if I can put a hole in it, I can stitch it.  I'm thinking of doing 1 inch squares, maybe 2 inches.  Still figuring out a design.  Possibly a flower or dragonfly as this is going to be sitting outside.

don't forget french knots! great for filler. They may be a little intimidating but once you figure out a way that works for you they are great.
