2  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Discussion and Questions / What is the best glossy, durable finish for decoupage? on: August 20, 2013 09:06:19 AM
Recently I made a decoupaged bangle bracelet. This is my first foray into decoupage. I researched but could not find a definitive answer for what is best to seal / gloss. I finished over the paper with Mod Podge but it is tacky. I want something that is high gloss, and adds durability as this is a wearable item. I don't want it to get nicked or scratched up when worn. I bought some Krylon UV-Resistant Acrylic Coating Aerosol as well as some Duraclear Exterior Gloss Polyurethane Varnish. Last night I tested both on something else to see how they came out. I'm really nervous about applying something to my bracelet and it getting ruined as a spent awhile making it and love how it came out. The problem I have with the Acrylic spray is that even after drying, it smells. It smells strongly like paint thinner and I don't want my bracelet to smell like that or have to smell it the whole time I am wearing it. It is glossier than the duraclear but is still a little tacky after drying for 12 hours. The duraclear varnish doesn't smell (as strong anyway) but how durable is it going to make my bracelet? does is just add gloss or does it seal it and is it durable? What is the the difference between "varnish" and "coating"? It seems like there are so many products and I don't know what I am looking at. Does anyone have any suggestions for a specific product that adds gloss, durability, and seals?
