21  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / Valentine Box on: February 09, 2009 08:05:52 AM
Does anyone else buy pack of craft things and keep the bits they think they'll never use?  I keep everything - even the sentimental hearts and teddy bear images that people give me or that are part of the really cool set I found at the dollar store.  I guess I finally found a use for them this month.

I made a valentine box to set on my desk at work this week.  I used a ton of stuff I never thought I'd need and found that my imagination kicked in as I filled up the empty spaces with other bits of odds and ends.

I like this color scheme of Red, pink, white and baby blue.  I'm seeing this combination everywhere from blogs to clothes and I had a great time digging through my stash to coordinate and combine these colors.

This was a box for an origami kit someone gave me and so the slot was perfect for valentines and it opens so nicely to get to the goodies.  I hope I get lots of candy.

Lastly I put legs on the box - because my valentine box needed legs.  It wants attention.

22  Illinois / Illinois: North / Crafty neighborhoods & hotels on: February 04, 2009 09:45:27 AM
Hello Windy City Craftsters!  I'm planning a special weekend retreat for my craft friends and we are looking for a hotel or bed & breakfast in a area where we can find artsy shops and craftster type yarn/paper stores.  I'm looking at the wicker park area simply because I've been there - but if there is a better neighborhood I'd love suggestions!  Thanks
23  POTTERY, CERAMICS, POLYMER CLAY / Polymer Clay: Completed Projects / first poly-post on: February 02, 2009 10:31:48 AM
I made these discs over a year ago and just used them in a craft project this month.

I used white polymer clay, stamped the stars and baked them.  When theywere dry I panted and embossed them.  Lastly I sanded the edges and used a metalic oil pastel to add a shimmer.  What do you think?  Any additions to the process?

Here is a link to the final project. http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=289694.0
24  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / A Night at the Opera on: January 29, 2009 02:21:29 PM
This challenge really got me going on a project I've been conceptualizing for a long long time.  Here is my theatre:

I made the curtains out of newspaper and magazine photos

The Stage is decorated with sheet music

The quote is from a children's book and created this whole scene in my head.

And here she is....the star of the show

This is the cereal box that got me started.  I must say that I'm eating a lot of expensive cereal from Target this days.

25  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / Travel Art Journal (image heavy) on: September 04, 2008 07:00:07 AM
I read an article in Cloth Paper Scissors (maybe last month?) about pre-paring your art/travel journal before you leave on your trip.  Im planning a trip at the moment and so I thought I would begin my journal with old and new techniques.  Here is the book:

I started applying gesso to the pages with brushes and then used a sandpaper block to remove the gesso that didnt completely adhere.

Next I applied gesso to the pages with a putty knife.  I laid the gesso on very lightly so that the black and white photos could still be seen

Then I used a brayer to spread gesso across the page.  This time the effect is something like a sponge but the texture is light enough to write without difficulty.

I don't think I'll do journaling over the photos, instead the white spaces will give me plenty of room to record my thoughts and journey.

26  NEWS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT CRAFTSTER / Craftster Picture Hosting Support / Success (but not really) on: September 02, 2008 01:22:06 PM
I tried to upload some pics today toCraftster Photo Hosting and I got the message "You've sucessfully finished...etc."  but my pictures didn't appear with the others in my gallery.  I checked and my images were over the 2MB limit so I re-sized them and tried it again.  Same message, no images.  Any ideas?
27  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Alice stacks the deck on: July 20, 2008 02:12:37 PM
I was waiting for another challenge - but the card theme wasn't working for me...I was about to give up until I went through my children's book collection.  I love Alice in Wonderland and have several copies for my craft projects.  Inspiration hit and in my book (on stilts) Alice meets a deck of cards in danger from the Queen of Hearts!  I think Alice found a note during her adventure that said: Pick Me.

I have to thank my dad for taking the pictures.  Mine were horrible.

28  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / My House of Tudor on: April 23, 2008 02:35:41 PM
I've been working on this project for about three months.  I'm really please and have started my second altered house...

I used all sorts of painting techniques, image transfers, and various mediums.  I trashed my craft room as I was in a manic inspired state looking for stamps and charms and paper.  I'll post pictures of the back later and one showing the size.

Oh - and I didn't build the house.  I got it as unfinished wood project at Michaels.  Still Artistic?  This is my first project for this thread.
