11  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Back to Hogwarts 5 - CLOSED; SENDOUTS OCT 10 on: September 24, 2014 06:42:11 PM
I should be crafting again this weekend (I still need to get the supplies for the swap to my dorm room). It's so exciting to hear how things are coming along for people!

Finally getting a chance to post with some projects. I'm doing a bit better now. I've moved into my dorm room and so had there have only been two issues (but no roommate issues, thank Merlin). The Slytherin common room and Astronomy Tower should be updated soon (I think I finally figured out a good spreadsheet format for the Slytherin house points) but I'm too tired to deal with that now.

Class/Challenge/House Pride:Alchemy
SPEW: N/A
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Rose and pistachio shortbread
Project Page Link: None
Brief Description: Both Venus and Aphrodite are associated with love, as are rose petals and pistachios. I made some (delicious) shortbread that contains both of these ingredients and charmed the snacks for self love. They went to a friend in a swap that I organized on Tumblr.
Recipe: (The recipe comes from the book Cooking with Flowers by Miche Bacher which is a fantastic book, I can't wait to own a copy)
Ingredients
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flower
1/2 cup rice flower
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup (two sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons finely ground pistachios
1 tablespoon rose water
1/4 cup rose petals

Procedure
1) Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line a 9-inch square pan with foil and place a square of parchment over the bottom of the pan. Lining the pan with foil and parchment makes it easy to remove the shortbread form the pan while it's still hot.
2) Sift flours and salt together three times.
3) With a mire on medium-high speed, cream butter for 2 minutes or until smooth. Slowly beat in sugar until it is fully integrated. Mix in half the flour. Add pistachios, rose water, and rose petals. Turn mixer to low speed and beat in the remaining flour, being careful not to over mix.
4) Press dough into prepared pan, again very gently. Bake for about 50 minutes, until lightly golden brown on top. Remove shortbread form pan and cut it into 1 1/2 inch squares. Spread shortbread squares on a packing sheet and bake them for about 5 minutes more until the edges are a little golden. This shortbread can be stored for up to 10 days in a tin or foil-lined container.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Care of Magical Creatures
SPEW: N/A
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Herb flower shortbread
Project Page Link: None
Brief Description: This is another shortbread that I made for my friend on Tumblr. This one contains the unusual combination of savory and sweet and is also very delicious. My little brother loved it (he was very sad that I was going to ship out most of it).
Recipe: (This recipe also comes from the book Cooking with Flowers by Miche Bacher)
Ingredients
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flower
1/2 cup rice flower
1 cup (two sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 teaspoon flaky sea salt
1 tablespoon lemon zest
4 tablespoon herb flowers (whatever you have on hand. I used borage, calendula, sage, and mint)
Procedure
1) Preheat oven to 350 F. Line a 9-inch square pan with foil and put a square of parchment on the bottom. It might seem redundant to use both foil and parchment to line the pan, but for this recipe it makes good sense if you want to 'double-bake' it in step 4.
2) Sift flours together twice. Beat butter with a mixer on medium speed for at least 3 minutes, until light and creamy. Slowly add sugar with the mixture on low speed. Scrape down the sides of the bowl to make sure it's all in.
3) Stir salt, lemon zest, and herb flowers into flour mixture. Gently work into flour mixture, being careful not to over mix. (This ensures a light, buttery shortbread.)
4) Press batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. At this point you can let it cool, slice it, and serve. Or, for a crisp, crunchy shortbread, let it cool for about 10 minutes, slice it into 1 1/2 by 2 inch rectangles (which leaves a little left over for the chef to nibble on), spread it out on a foil-lined baking sheet, and put it back in the oven for 10 minutes to brown the edges. (I chose to cut this shortbread into triangles.)
Project Picture:

This shortbread turned out to be a little flaky (probably because I didn't mix it well enough) but it was still very good.

Edit: I forgot to add that I have made some progress on my NEWT lately (I got all the way through writing out the Major Arcana of the tarot section). My NEWT is crossed out on the front page and I was wondering if that meant anything... Also, I would like to cancel my current transfiguration OWL. While I liked the idea at first, the project I proposed turned out not to be possible.

I'm going to take a small break from crafting for now. I'm still on schedule but I just (as in a few hours ago) moved into my dorm room and have a week full of 'welcome week' activities that I'll be caught up in.

Just stopping by to say hi and that everything looks great. I'm in a bit of a bad headspace right now but I'll update everything and even submit some assignments when things are better. I am happy to share with you all that I got a job at my local library!

Still planning. I know what I want to do but I don't know if I can do it in a timely manner

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Appiration
SPEW: N/A
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Flower necklace
Project Page Link: none
Brief Description: This necklace doesnt look like any specific part of the human body but when worn it hangs lightly asymmetrically reminding us that humans arent perfectly symmetrical, only passably so.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Arithmancy
SPEW: N/A
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Planets
Project Page Link: none
Brief Description: The number nine. Once the muggles considered there to be nine planets in our solar system but that is no longer the case. Some of us still remember all nine of the planets. This glow-in-the-dark mobile pays tribute to all nine celestial objects.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Astronmy
SPEW: N/A
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Graduation Cap
Project Page Link: none
Brief Description: So I graduated (from High School) at the beginning of this summer and I decided to decorate my cap. As you can see, the cap is covered in glow-in-the-dark stars and small LED lights (I had the only light up cap). Not only does the cap depict a section of the night sky, it also references one of my favorite quotes; He looked at his own Soul with a telescope. What seemed all irregular, he saw and showed to be beautiful constellations, and he added to the consciousness hidden worlds within worlds. -- Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Notebooks

Project Name: Felt Fox

Brief Description: This project represents none other than a red fox.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: House Unity
SPEW: N/A
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Altered tin
Project Page Link: none
Brief Description: I made this tin for my partner in the altered tin swap. The sparkles on the top of the tin shift from silver to gold in sunlight. When the sparkles are gold, the tin is red and gold (Gryffindor colors) and the shift from silver (a Slytherin color) to gold (Gryffindor) reminds us that we might be in different houses but we really are quite similar.

I hope all these descriptions make sense.
18  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Craftalongs / Astronomy Tower on: August 28, 2014 08:16:35 AM
Hello and welcome to Astronomy, this term we will be taking a step back from focusing on specific aspects of the night sky. It is a pleasure to have you all here and I can't wait to see what crafty magic the Heavens inspire in you.

Completed Coursework: I was lucky enough to procure an old Muggle astronomy book and this is where our assignment for the semester comes from.  What we study in Astronomy consists of things that we know. The truth my dear students, is that there is still so much we DON'T know about the night sky. We know more now than we ever have before but there is still so much to learn. This term you must tackle something unknown. Whether this means learning a new craft technique or researching some aspect of the night sky you don't know and making something inspired by it or tackle the unknown in some other way I leave up to you. Just make sure that you explain how you tackled the unknown when you turn in your assignment.

Proposed OWLs: Option 1-Craft a star chart.  Option 2-Interpret the solar system into a craft.  Option 3-It is believed that we can only see 5% of the universe, the rest is made up of Dark Matter and Dark Energy which is invisible to us. Create something where at first glance you can only see a small portion, but when you look closer you can find the rest of the details.

WELCOME TO THE SLYTHERIN DUNGEON
The dungeon is still under a bit of construction. All students who don't want their beds full of lake water would be advised to cast an Impervius Charm on their bedding. If you don't know how, ask either myself or an older student to assist you.

To our new students welcome and to our returning students welcome back. I will be your Head of House for this term. Feel free to refer any questions to me via owl (PM), I will do my best to get back to you in a timely manner.
