Class/Challenge/House Pride: Apparition
SPEW: n/a
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Yggdrasil Pendant
Project Page Link: None
Brief Description: Yggdrasil is the tree central to most Norse mythology, it connects all nine reams. If you can get to the tree you can get to anywhere in the realms.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Astronomy
SPEW: n/a
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Persephone’s Dark Days
Project Page Link: None (yet)
Brief Description: Persephone was a goddess of spring who became queen of the underworld when she was kidnapped by Haides. She must spend 6 months of the year in the underworld owing to the six pomegranate seeds that she ate while there. This necklace was made using the Day and Night pendant that I turned in at the end of last term. I would like to think that Persephone found light in the midst of her darkness and used that energy to create something positive.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Charms
SPEW: n/a
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Valknut
Project Page Link: none
Brief Description: The valknut symbolizes the 9 realms of Norse mythology, joined by Odin. This project required sawing with a jeweler’s saw as well as soldering.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: DADA
SPEW: n/a
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Lumos
Project Page Link: none
Brief Description: Last term the lovely Linakins made a unicorn badge that became to stepping stone for a personal swap. I would consider her to be a new friend. This piece was a part of the package that I sent to her. The embroidery is done on a page of a damaged copy of PoA that I picked up at a used bookstore for art projects. I used glow in the dark embroidery thread and burned the edges of the paper using a lit stick of incense.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: History of Magic
SPEW: n/a
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Tree
Project Page Link: none
Brief Description: For my 18th birthday, my mom took my sister and me to a tree grafting class. I got to make my very own apple tree. Apple blossoms represent love, fertility, and peace. The tree will be able to live in a pot it’s whole life due to the dwarfing rootstock, which will enable it to bring harmony and peace to wherever I live.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Potions
SPEW: n/a
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Forget-me-not ring
Project Page Link: none
Brief Description: This ring is made out of sterling silver, which could be considered a luxury or difficult to source (read – expensive) material. The original design had forget-me-not flowers on it but that aspect of the design was very hard to realize.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: SoAR
SPEW: n/a
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Dragon Eggs
Project Page Link: none
Brief Description: The rune berkano represents rebirth and new beginnings. I cannot think of a more appropriate symbol for such a rune. These dragon eggs embody the same things as the rune we are berkano.

I made some small progress with my NEWT this week. I composed two scrying chants and I am now ready to move on to tasseomancy. If you are interested in taking a look at the information I have gathered so far, it can be found here

The Slytherin Common Room and Astronomy Tower are now up-to-date.

I have a question for the Slytherin students… What sort of common room challenge would you be interested in me organizing this term? I would love to do some sort of house competition or extra credit challenge but I want your suggestions.

12  Under a Tree in the Moonlight in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by DragonChilde on: March 03, 2014 10:04:10 PM
One of the first assignments for the jewelry class I am currently taking was a cold connection self-portrait. I ended up making a pin for the little caplet that was given to me at my menarche ceremony (the maker forgot to add a clasp to mine).

Here's an action shot:

And a closeup of the little vixen:

And the pin back:

The pin back was the most frustrating part of making this pin, I just about danced when I got it right (after the fourth or fifth try). I also had a hard time getting the holes for the rivets to line up, but that wasn't as frustrating as the pin back.

Oh, explanations of how it is a self-portrait, the tree represents the tree of life and the world tree which is a nod to my work with the Valkyries, the moon is a nod to my fair lady Artemis, and the fox is my inner animal.

Credit for the basic design of the tree goes to the lovely IvyNightwind on deviantART, I pulled her tree of life tattoo design on my computer and drew out something very similar in my sketchbook.

I have a final project dump as well. I don't have time for comments right now, and the Slytherin Common Room is not updated yet but I will try to get to that asap.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Alchemy
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Self-Portrait Pin
Project Page Link: linkety link link
Brief Description: One of the options for this class was to craft something 100% pure, and I think this project fits that requirement. While the pin is not made of one single material, the pin is a sort of self-portrait and as such is 100% me. Pin is composed of three elements; a tree of life, a full moon, and a bitty little fox. All of these elements represent something to me. The tree is representative of Yggdrasil which is a nod to the work I do with Valkyries and my interest in Norse mythology. The full moon is representative of the Greek Goddess Artemis and my devotion to her. The little fox is representative of myself as the fox is my inner animal, for lack of a better term, and my animagus.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: DA Impediment Jinx
Quidditch: Score a goal for Slytherin (made from my stash)
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Matchbox
Project Page Link: none
Brief Description: This matchbox was made out of an old cocoa tin from my grandmother's house. The box includes an area on which to strike matches and the design of the lid (lid not pictured) will block water from getting in.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: DA Reductor
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Day and night
Project Page Link: none
Brief Description: I made this pendant for the jewelry class I am currently taking. I cut out all of the pieces and soldered them together. It took me something like 5 times to solder the top piece on. The pendant can be approximated by a circle with the diameter of 2 inches (making it less than 3x3)
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: DA Shield Charm
Quidditch: Catch the snitch for Slytherin (a lotion to prevent player's hands from chapping)
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Chocolate orange lotion
Project Page Link: none
Brief Description: This lotion will help shield my hands from the elements. It is made from calendula oil, sweet almond oil, lime and bitter orange essential oils, dry lecithin, cocoa butter and water. It is a little more oily than commercial lotions but it soaks into hands fairly quickly. I didn't have any vitamin E on hand so it has very little preservatives which means that mould has to scraped off the top but it still works fine. At first the lotion separated (I was beating it by hand because my sister broke our hand blender doing a science project) but I heated it again and mixed it using our Kitchen aid mixer and a pot of hot water and then ice packs. Because I added orange essential oil and the cocoa butter was unbleached, the lotion has the aroma of those chocolate oranges that you bang on the table and eat in orange segment shaped pieces.

I haven't made much progress with my NEWT recently but it is still in progress.

14  Astronomy Tower in Craftalongs by DragonChilde on: February 26, 2014 08:18:27 PM
Hello and welcome to Astronomy, this term we will be studying the lovely star cluster known as the Pleiades. It is a pleasure to have you all here and I can't wait to see what crafty magic the Pleiades inspire in you.

Completed Coursework: This term we will be studying the Pleiades, a cluster of stars found near Taurus the bull. According to Greek mythology, the Pleiades were companions Artemis the virgin goddess of the hunt. According to some myths they were placed in the sky as stars by Zeus shortly after their father Atlas was condemned to carry the world and they became deeply saddened. Other versions of the tale state that they were turned into stars by Zeus to allow them to escape from Orion. Your job this term is to either take something negative (either negative emotions or objects that you are not particularly fond of) and turn it into something positive/beautiful or to make something with seven parts. You may also, if you so wish, do some research of your own and make something that relates to another myth about the Pleiades.

Create something where at first glance you can only see a small portion, but when you look closer you can find the rest of the details.

18  Has anyone fed the goats yet? in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General by DragonChilde on: February 04, 2014 09:27:43 AM
I live on a little urban farm with my mom, sister, and brother. We have goats, rabbits, and chickens (we also have a pet cat, dog, Guinea pig, and some fish). One of the hardest things lately has been figuring out which farm chores have already been done (especially when I sleep in and everyone is gone when I wake up). So, to make a long story somewhat shorter my mom asked me to make her a farm chore chart. We went to Hobby Lobby and got two wooden wooden coat racks (these ones) and some painted wood cut outs. The result was this chore chart

The top row is for chores that need to be done and the bottom row is for chores to be done. We couldn't find any goat cut outs so the goats chores are represented by a cow, and the pig represents the Guinea pig chores. Now I don't have to annoy my siblings by asking them if the goats have been fed every morning.

I really hope this is the right place for this project...

Getting this in just under the wire  Wink I've been sick today so bear with me if the description doesn't make a lot of sense (actually, if it doesn't make much sense let me know I will fix it as soon as I have the brain capacity)
Class/Challenge/House Pride: New Year Resolution
Quidditch: Bludger against Hufflepuff (snow globes=snowy weather)
Project Name: Snow globes
Project Page Link (if available): None
Brief Description: My resolution this year is to be less self-critical and more positive. After I cast these little figures, I had to paint them and they didn't turn out the way I was hoping. I (like I think a lot of people do) couldn't stop myself from looking at them and seeing all the little mistakes but then I showed them to my mom and the first thing she said was "Oh those are so cute". It took me a second to see it but then I realized that she was right, they are cute and I love them (flaws and all). They have been sitting on my desk for a few days and every time I look at them I remind myself that I don't have to be so self-critical. I can choose to be positive.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Arithmancy
Project Name: Triple Goddess Shrine
Project Page Link: Yup
Brief Description: I made this shrine for my partner in a recent swap. The shrine features both the number three and four. The front of the shrine features a triple panel and I painted three moons on the sides and top of the shine (waxing crescent, full, waning crescent). The image on the back of the shrine features the four stages of life (babe, maiden, mother, crone), and there are four flowers on the top of the shrine to represent the four elements. Both three and four represent stability and I am particularly fond of both. (for more pictures and a more detailed description follow the link through to the project page)

Class/Challenge/House Pride: DADA
Project Name: Mother Mary Shrine
Project Page Link: Yup
Brief Description: I made this shrine for a swap as well, it went to my partner's boss. I looped wire through some holes in the back of the tin so that it can hang on a wall. I wrote the verse myself, and found the picture online. The green paper came from my stash. (for more pictures and a more detailed description follow the link through to the project page)
