2  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / For those about to rock... on: July 19, 2011 06:00:18 PM
we salute you!   Wink  If you have never seen the Minipop Book by Craig Robinson, you really should.  He pixelates famous people really small, perfect for cross stitch.  Years ago I saw someone on flicker do a series of these, and thought they were too cool.  I finally found an easy way to chart them:  with an ipod.  You can download the app for $2, then save the shot to your camera roll.  Bring up the picture, make it bigger and then stitch away!  I won't say who they are, you can probably figure them out if you like 80's music!   Cheesy

best band EVER. btw...  Wink

6  POTTERY, CERAMICS, POLYMER CLAY / Pottery, Ceramics, etc: Completed Projects / Hand Built Bird & Shroom Plate on: October 31, 2010 05:37:16 PM
Here's my latest hand built plate, fresh out of the kiln:

It's made from light brown speckled stoneware clay, glazed first in celadon with a wash of blue on top.  I wiped off most of the blue and liked the result of just having it accent the stampings.  The mushroom stamp I received in a craftster swap from craftystoner, and I think it accents the rim perfectly.  The bird is a Martha Stewart stamp.  Thanks for looking, C & C appreciated.   Cheesy

9  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / Fiesta-Themed Bridal Shower***Pics Galore*** on: August 09, 2010 02:46:50 PM
As Maid of Honor and a total craftster  Wink, I knew throwing my sister's Bridal Shower would be a handmade extravaganza.  She decided she wanted Mexican Food on the menu, it's August, and the party room we rented was both inside and outside so I thought how about a fiesta?  But not a cheesy fiesta with pinatas and sombreros, a little more classy and subdued.  On to the pictures!

Invitations:

The finished invite cost less than the stamp to mail it.   Cheesy  To make them I bought a book of brightly colored scrapbook paper(both solid & prints), a container of brads and a box of brightly colored envelopes.  Then I got out the papercutter and went to work.  I was able to print 4 at a time on my printer on the solid paper(cut these a bit smaller than the envelope), cut the patterned paper to the size of the envelope, punched 2 holes and attached with the brads.  Close-up:

For the favors, I thought salsa bowls with a salsa recipe would be cute AND useful.  The bowls were from the dollar store(2 for a $1), bought a few spools of ribbon and some fancy paper and made a mountain of favors:

a closeup:

For the centerpieces I found really cute vases for $1.50 at the best store ever, Old Time Pottery.  I really wanted to do real flowers, but time & money made silk a more feasible option.   Wink  I found festive sprays for $1 each, so each centerpiece only cost $2.50.

Using my cricut I made buntings like this:

The love bunting hung over by where they opened presents, and a congratulations with the bride and groom's name hung outside on the deck:

The cantina bunting hung in front of the bar:

and I made vases for the bar out of a Corona bottle, some glass marbles and a silk flower spray:

The table setting was a simple yellow paper place mat, the salsa bowl favor and silverware wrapped with tissue paper flowers:

The flowers were easy to make, and really cheap.  I took 4 pieces of tissue paper(alternating between red & orange)and cut to about the size of an index card.  Accordian fold the shorter side into about half inch folds, fold in half and secure with a green pipe cleaner.  Cut either side of the flower into points(for the petals), unfold carefully so you don't rip it, fluff and wrap around the silverware roll.  Fun and festive!  Table shot:

The food tables were covered with brightly colored serapes:

and the menu consisted of hard & soft tacos, beans, rice, chicken, fruit salad, greens salad, nacho cheese/guacamole/lots of salsas and chips.  Margaritas and punch to drink:

I wish I could take credit for the awesome cake:

but I didn't make it, the bride's Godmother did.   Wink

I framed a photo of the happy couple with one of the big mats you buy that can be written on so the guests could write their well wishes when dropping off their gift.  My Mom made the card box, I wish I had a closeup it was so pretty:

She took 2 boxes, covered in fabric, cut a small slit in the top box and a larger in the bottom.

I also made a playlist on my ipod, and for background music I added Madonna(La Isla Bonita & Don't Cry For Me Argentina, the bride LOVES Madonna), Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan, Los Lobos, Marc Antony, Shakira, Ritchie Valens, Selena, Jennifer Lopez, Gerardo(if you are a child of the 80's, your remember Rico Suave  Wink )and a few others with a fiesta feel.  And that's the end, thanks for looking!

10  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Zesty Chorizo & Summer Squash Soup on: August 02, 2010 03:41:42 PM
After putting up a very tall fence, the deer have FINALLY stayed out of my garden this year.   Cheesy  So, since we have tons of zucchini:

I am always thinking up new ways to prepare it.   Wink  In about an hour, you too can have a delicious soup.  Here's the recipe:

4 cups low sodium chicken broth
1 14.5 oz can crushed tomatoes
1 pound chorizo(mexican sausage)
1 zuchinni, cubed
1 yellow squash, cubed
1 red onion, diced
1 can black beans, rinsed & drained
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 teaspoon cilantro
1 heaping teaspoon cumin
freshly ground pepper, about 8 turns of your pepper mill
4 T lime juice
Minute Rice Brown Rice, 1 bag cooked

Put chicken broth and crushed tomatoes in a large pot over medium heat.  Add all remaining ingredients EXCEPT for rice & chorizo.  Brown chorizo in a skillet, drain fat.  When fully cooked, slice chorizo into circles and add to pot.  Bring almost to a boil, reduce heat to low.  Cook about an hour until squash is soft, stirring occasionally.  Before serving, spoon a few tablespoons of brown rice into each bowl, stir and enjoy.(I do it this way because the rice will soak up too much of the broth, unless you will be eating the whole pot right away.)

Serves 6.

Close-up:

Bon apetit!
