Honestly, I think this piece is designed just as it appears, with a hole for the tummy. Look at the holes in the head. That doesn't mean you can't have a blast filling the oval, though!

I have successfully used everything from beach sand in a shallow baking tray to craft foam in various colors. Beach sand is great because the piece will more or less stay where you put it. Use a paintbrush to get stray sand off the piece, and just blow gently to "sculpt" the sand and get rid of dents and finger marks. I have also raked the sand for a corduroy texture.

Gray craft foam is a little boring, but also lets the subject "pop". Velvet can suck too much light out of the product. Strong background colors will reflect onto the product, and that may be undesirable. I have also used subtly patterned quilt fabric in blue/gray colors...
