Here is a video with an old lady making the stiches... around min.5 is where she actually starts doing the stitches.

It's Hungarian Smiley 

Here is a better example:
this is the stitch, however the next stitch is very close to the previous, no big gaps as in this video, but for seeing how the stitches are it's a very good example

I think chain stitch is the name Smiley I learned as kid, but never "named" the stiches

This type of embroidery is traditionally red, blue or white, but I wanted something different. So I used this color Smiley The motifs and the stitches are from an area of Transylvania called Kalotaszeg.
