3  My first band flyer - I had to post it! in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by brickabrack on: October 29, 2005 06:11:36 AM
Hello nice people.
A nice friend asked me if I could design an "off-beat southern" style flyer for a bunch of bands coming to town that are all spooky southern indie rock sounding.....so with a few ideas and drinks later,  this is the result, and he's very happy with it - yay!

4  Weekly World News (*new* with larger pictures) in CHALLENGE 6 ENTRIES by brickabrack on: October 08, 2005 08:00:44 PM
Inspired by Dead Can Dance's song "The Carnival".

My intent was to use fun images against a strategically placed geometic background on 17x24 canvas.

(my 3 favorite Fabulous Freaks of the piece)

5  Re: Pulp fiction lamps! come one come all! in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by brickabrack on: September 29, 2005 08:28:31 AM
Thanks guys, much appreciated. People have thought of film lamps before - I'm not the first one. I just tried to make something different from the things I've seen so far.

I can't say where I got the film, but I have a ton more of it left. Napoleon Dynamite would make a kick ass lamp, you should post it!! I'd like to see if can get my hands on something older - perhaps Labrynth?!

Experience while making it:

What I did was I sewed the strips together by hand which takes a while using thick embroidery string. Since I didn't just use one string, for the whole thing, the ends got a little messy with tying the string, so I actually hot glued ribbon over it that was the same color of the string, making it look clean, and hiding the fact that I suck at sewing!!

After hot gluing the ribbon on,  I realized that the hot glue was easily seen under it, so I covered that with little black pom-poms, and it made it more girl-ified. I suppose you could just use thicker ribbon to cover it though, so the hot glue doesn't show as bad and you don't have to cover it with pom-poms!!(lol)

I learned alot about film while I was making this, how you can tell which way it goes, and how many images go into making each scene.

I will probably make another one today since yal like em so much!

My technique was really trial and error and alot of patience. Be sure when using film that you have some kind of organization, or else you will get lost under a pile of film and have to roll it back up again(lol)

I just stuck a clear plastic CD holder under it to light it up too

10  re-upolstered oriental lamp in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General by brickabrack on: September 12, 2005 01:03:15 PM

the lamp used to be covered with dented rice paper, then I re-upholstered it with silk and used a cherry blossom stencil for a quick design, and now I don't have to buy a new lamp!
