1  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Craft Book Swap? on: May 27, 2014 12:36:24 PM
So on impulse I buy craft books. I'm sure I'm not alone in this seeing as we crafters sometimes like to "collect' all things craft related.

That being said, I was wondering if maybe anyone would be interested in swapping craft books! I have so many lovely ones, I've never used, and I know someone else might love. The catch to this swap is that before we trade out books, we also craft 1 medium item from one of the book/s being traded for your partner.

Does this sound interesting to anyone?
2  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Mermaid Doll on: May 19, 2014 12:00:06 PM
So here's my second attempt at an art doll.

This one was made for Crysoleil for the Random Swap. She's more sculpture than art doll, but she looks more dolly like so I put her here.

I have never sculpted before really. I got the idea of this doll from here: http://ateliersusanatavares.blogspot.com/2012/09/mermaid-art-doll.html

Mine is a cartooney version of that because I just can't do that ugly pretty art thing that so many talented people can.

Here's the back of her

Sh's made from a mixture of salt clay and paper clay. She's rather heafty, but I wanted her to have some weight so it would hold up on travel.

I painted her with arcylics and varnished her

Her starfish is also made from salt clay

And her gorgeous hair is made from silky soft merino wool roving.

I also made her stand by hand using a plaque base and some dowel I bought at Hobby Lobby. I drilled, cut, sanded, colored, and lacquered everything myself! '

She is cartoony, but I like the way she came out. I think she'd make a sweet addition for grown ups and little girls.

Anyway, let me know what you think. Feedback and constructive critiques are wanted and welcome!

4  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Fairy Mobile on: April 26, 2014 09:49:15 AM
So I was on Etsy and I saw the most adorable needlefelted mobile/hanging things and decided I wanted to try making one too.

This is what I came up with:

It's a needlefelted fairy riding a sewn felt dragon

The dragon is an enlarged version of this adorable dragon mobile pattern I bought. I'll link it later if anyone is interested. I use only Benziedesign wool felt for my projects.

The fairy was my design. I created a write frame and used a wooden bead for a head. The dress was hand needle felted as well as the little flower cap. This is my first time needle felting something like this. She's only about 2 inches big at most. The dragon is somewhere around 4 inches.

That's pretty much it! Thanks for looking and please let me know what you think.

5  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / My First Art Doll on: April 26, 2014 09:39:23 AM

I made this doll for waggonswest for the most recent art doll swap. She's a flower sprite. I made her from La Doll Stone Clay.

Her hair is made from this golden brown yarn I think it was the Vanna White stuff. The butterfly on her head was handdyed. It was originally a light Mint color and I darkened it up. The rose in her hair is made of paper.

Her dress is made from the guts of the Harry Potter novel I gutted and turned into a book safe. I colored her dress using Tim Holtz inks. The dress was then decoupaged for protection, texture and shine. She is unfinished to give her a more primitive look. My next doll will be varnished I think. I plan on making other dolls like this.

I am super pleased how she came out.

Please let me know what you all think.

6  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Easter / Dragon Eggs for Khaleesi on: April 19, 2014 07:33:53 PM

So I made these dragon eggs for the Geek Easter Basket Swap. They're made from paper mache clay.Next time I make these eggs I'm going to paper mache them closed from the outside so they will have to be smashed like a pinata in order to remove the contents.

7  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Wedding Swap on: January 28, 2014 10:16:20 AM
I was just curious if anything like this has ever happened before? I just got engaged yesterday to my long time sweetheart; we've been together on and off for the last 13 years and I love the idea of a handmade wedding, the only trouble is I'm not great at enough things to do everything on my own, but I love the idea of other Craftster brides to be (or not) trading talents and making each other beautiful things for their special day. I'd also be up to personal swaps for it too.
8  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Angry Piata on: November 03, 2013 05:13:54 PM
So this year I made my costume and I was super excited with the results. This is my costume:

I was the Angry Piata. I would hit random people with my whacking stick and then give them candy from my Piata purse.

To make the dress I got a long tank top from Walmart and cute a slit up the back. I attached ribbons to tie it onto myself. I tried up the ribbons and then slid the shirt over a board to stretch it out so I could hot glue the crepe paper streamers to it.

For the ears I bought plush cat ears and cut them up so I could move them up higher since equine ears are pretty much on the tops of their heads. I then reattached the ears by sewing them back on and then wrapped them all up in crepe paper and attached crepe paper tassels.

For the whacking stick I used a empty roll of gift wrap and stuffed it with paper. I then duct taped the handle and the seam so it wouldn't split when I hit people. I hot glued on many layers of crepe paper.

The Piata purse was the best part. I basically made the whole thing by hand. I traced the body design onto cardboard and then duct taped in cardboard in between to make the body stand. I modge podged on brown kraft paper in several layers for strength and duct taped the handles for stability. I then hot glued on the crepe paper.

I wish I had taken pictures of my process but I always forget to do so while crafting. I promise I will get better at that when I post new projects. I'm just super excited that the first craft I posted was for this contest!
