1  Re: Monster Swap Round 6 Gallery in The Swap Gallery by artsycandice on: June 29, 2016 09:09:28 PM
I received from rockingbearranch an adorable package, behold!

Everything came tucked inside the fun monster pouch, that is very well made, by-the-way. Grin There is a cute little monster drawing and two crazy stitched monsters that look like they might be made out of marshmallows!

Here are the duo. The larger one is holding a spoon and I haven't decided if it intends on feeding or eating the smaller monster. I suppose the point is moot either way as the monster pouch ate them all! Muahahaha!!

And the super cute monster drawing. I love him!

Thank you so much for swapping with me!!

3  Beistle Inspired Art Doll in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by artsycandice on: May 29, 2016 02:34:08 PM
So, there are these fabulous vintage Halloween images that I had no idea actually a name! You should check them out here: Beistle. Thank you Pottermouth for that. I had never heard that word before seeing it on her questionnaire. So, I was completely inspired by them and made this doll for her in the Everyday is Halloween swap.

The body beneath I stuffed with fiber fill. His limbs can bend, but won't hold their post. The shimmering costume is made from shirts I bought at a second hand store. The ribbon around his neck is a scrap piece I got from an artsy reuse center.

With his mask:

Unmasked:

Holding a little fabric pumpkin with a sculpted clay stem:

His little snazzy shoes. I sewed on the teeny buttons that wrapped the ribbon around them.

I didn't take an exact measurement but I think he is about two feet long.

The mask easily goes on and lifts off.

If you don't want to hide his face the mask can be hung from the pumpkin stem.

His handsome profile.

I sculpted the face out of Sculpey clay (the flesh colored oven bake stuff) along with his hands and the pumpkin stem. He is painted with acrylics. First I painted all parts black them used a little sponge to apply two shades or orange together. It allowed for some wonderful dimension to appear.

You can barely see the wire hanger here for hanging him on a wall.

I wish that I had taken progress pictures. You can't tell, but when I sculpted the head I added a large clay block poking off the top of his head. This is to have something better to glue the hat to. The hat is a piece of card stock with fabric glued to it. The buttons are sewn on but the trim is glued down.

The buttons on his costume were a great find. They are plastic but the black centers are raised and fuzzy, like velvet. I was going to sew the on but the back protruded too far and made the buttons dangle down so I cut the backs off and used some heavy-duty glue on them.

He was soooo much fun to make, I want to make more! Thank you so much for swapping with me. Your were a wonderful inspiration.

I took a photo today with Flobot that I just HAD to share. I discovered this a couple of weeks ago in one of the parking garages downtown. Isn't it great?! I've no idea who put it up or why, but it's great.

Oh my goodness. That little duck is adorable! Cheesy

I had fixated on finding a beaver (our state animal) or a Western Meadowlark (our state bird) and that is why the hang up with pictures. But, I was outside looking at a tree and it occurred to me, that's a Douglas Fir, wait, THAT'S A DOUGLAS FIR!! (Our state tree) So...

Here is Flobot with the Oregon state tree...

And a close-up with the unique pinecones (still green and growing at this stage)...

The Story of the Douglas-fir Cones
"Indigenous legend in the Pacific Northwest tells that a long time ago there was a great fire in the forest. All of the animals were fleeing before the encroaching flames. However, the tiny mice with their short little mouse-legs were not quick enough to outrun the fire. In danger of being engulfed in the flames, they asked the strong and stoic Douglas-fir trees for help. The trees were inclined to be friendly to the mice, and allowed them to climb up their thick, fire-resistant trunks and hide themselves in their fir cones. The mice gladly took shelter inside the cones, and survived the terrible fire. And even today if you examine the cones of a Douglas-fir closely you can see the little hind feet and tails of the mice sticking out from beneath the scales of the fir cones."
Taken from this site.

And, because I thought to look up other "state things". Look, this whole time our state drink has been sitting in the fridge... milk! Grin Grin Grin

And, because we were outside and I'm happy they survived the winter and are blooming, my little succulent garden...

I received from the ever fabulous pottermouth. Brace yourselves...

Her stitches are sooooo tiny and wonderful. I had to look at it twice to be sure that the text is in fact all stitched in thread. I love the embroidered edges, the felt details, and the high level of craftsmanship that went into making this such a lovely piece. Thank you so very much. I just may keep it up year round. Grin

And a fun extra of graphic bird cards. I will likely frame these and hang them up. Cheesy

What exactly is an art doll:

From this article, Art Dolls: Facts and Fancies, on Etsy:

What is an art doll? This is as loaded a question as What is art?

Theres no hard and fast definition to be found for an art doll. They can be made out of almost any medium or several different media. They come in various shapes, sizes, styles, and designs. They can be very realistic or abstract with barely anything recognizable on them. They can be human, humanoid, anthropomorphic, alien, fantasy, sci-fi, or just about anything in between.

From Wikipedia, Art Doll:

Art dolls are objects of art, rather than children's toys, created in a wide variety of styles and media, and may include both pre-manufactured parts or wholly original works....Art dolls production demand a wide range of skills and technologies, including sculpting, painting, and costuming. They are often multimedia objects made from materials such as fabric, paperclay, polymer clay, wax, wood, porcelain, natural or synthetic hair, yarn, wool, and felt.

These doll will not necessarily be kid friendly (you don't have to use safety eyes, can have wire hair poking out, etc.). So yeah, whatever you want to do, rigid or squishy, humanoid, or other. Grin Your partner will likely influence the form and direction your doll takes. I am getting pretty excited about this one now. Grin

Spikefan requested a custom image for the last point that she had to spend. She sent a list of favorite birds, I chose the Yellow-billed Hornbill. I had intended to draw it, an atc or something, but had this little tiny canvas sitting there and it seemed a good fit.

It is great to see what all of the little visitors are up to. I am glad that Hawk is having a very rounded vacation. Cheesy

I took Flobot to the store I work in part time (I work out in the garden center part of it). We are a few weeks into a major remodel that is slated to end in November.

We went out into the garden part too and enjoyed some of the flower there. Here Flobot is enjoy a flat of marigolds.

Flobot with a begonia.

I had to share this because I didn't know that our local grocery store was a part of this program. I've seen in advertised but it was neat to see in person. (Flobot is hiding in the display. Smiley )
