I want to make a postcard mobile, but I've never made a mobile in my life . What do you recommend for wire? What tools would I need?

I'm moving into a teeny tiny sunroom (my roomie got the bedroom) with huge windows on 2 sides. I'm looking for shades/curtains that will hold in heat in the winter (I'm in DC, hate the cold, and can't afford huge gas bills!) and protect my beloved art and posters on my walls from getting bleached out. Any thoughts on how I can make something effective and cheap? It's gonna take a whole lotta fabric and I can't put holes in the walls for a rod...

(any ideas for making the most out of limited living space would help too!)
