1  Re: Death Concept Costume - I could Murder A Curry (pic heavy!) in Halloween Costumes by iamdolleyes on: November 05, 2008 12:18:10 PM
i am not sure if i even posted my pyramid head + nurse costume here... perhaps i should add some of my old costumes here for kicks..

here was pyramid head. we had a flayed corpse  zipper bag, for our wallets, keys, etc

and this was me
mask could have been better (i had full time classes that year heh, so it goes) and i didn't paint my skin for the pics..

then last year..i think the thread is still up but the pics are down, so i'll repost

i always feel bad about my lack of accuracy, if i'd actually start sooner than 3 weeks prior to halloween i might be able to stop compromising hehe

3  Death Concept Costume - I could Murder A Curry (pic heavy!) in Halloween Costumes by iamdolleyes on: November 05, 2008 11:09:13 AM
Right, so here's the other half of my costume project for this year...I proposed making a skull/death mask for my man, and he asked that it be "bad @ss" so here was my attempt

i will say up front, we both love the death character from terry pratchett's discworld, thus many jokes were had. I realize the infamous death does not have horns, but it was fun nonetheless. We even had curry for dinner on halloween prior to going out.

we usually do couple-y type costumes in a sense....last year we did a wow warlock + succubus, the year before was pyramid head + silent hill nurse..etc..no raggedy anne and raggedy andy here!

i was a little stumped this year, as we're currently living in temporary living conditions, meaning my crafting area is non existent and our budget was a little small, so we came up with the idea of 'death' him being modern, and i being more ancient (i actually went as anubis, that costume is posted here:
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=276982.0 )

i'm still playing with photos, it was hard to capture (me being not a fantastic photographer to start with) in the dark (he disappeared) and in the light (his skull gleamed in the sun) so bear with me Smiley

death contemplating playing the guitar..

death's mask on it's own

going for a stroll in his neighborhood

here's one of us together in the dark

and some process pics, please feel free to ask for details! there's a bit of an explanation in my other thread, but i can post it over here as well

and a teaser of my costume, in case you haven't looked at mine yet!

4  Will your heart weigh heavily against the feather of Ma'at? in Halloween Costumes by iamdolleyes on: November 03, 2008 03:58:48 PM
Let me weigh it for you and check

hmm, it looks a little heavy

This year I decided to go as Anubis (or Anput I guess, as I am female)
I try to do couple type costumes with my SO, though this year i'm not sure it counts so i'm just posting mine for the challenge, and will post his separately in the halloween forum.

onto more pictures

wheee jackal shadow

up close profile/head shot

goofy picture, i'm hungry for souls!

and obligatory silly photo

and a quick teaser of me and the man outside in the dark (which also shows why all my pictures are in bright daylight!  Huh sigh) i was an ancient death god, and he was an incarnation of more modern death (grim reaper/demonized death if you will)

Here is a link to my SO's costume posted in the halloween forum, which i also crafted
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=277269.0

final thoughts, if i were to do it all again (and i totally would) i think i would pass on the black paint this time - what a mess! but it was worth it, I won second prize out at the bar.

construction notes:

Everything was made by me except the boots. garments were strips of stretch twill sewn together to look like mummification wrappings, with some strips of stretchy fabric wrapped around my legs and boots.
The mask is foam applied to a plaster bandage mask, carved and then sealed and painted (papier mache, glue, etc) and then sealed again with kryolan crystal clear acrylic spray. no process pics of the clothes (boring!) but here's a few i remembered to snap of the mask. i'm bad for remembering pictures when i'm elbow deep in art gunk

as always, i'm happy to share construction methods or elaborate details. I can ramble on about my design decisions, but i'm afraid to bore y'all, so just ask!

thanks for looking, I hope you enjoyed my costume!

5  for the horde! in Shoes: Completed Projects by iamdolleyes on: January 09, 2008 05:37:23 PM
Man, I don't even know where to put these..they're not really shoes...they're slippers. but so it goes (move if necessary please!)

These were a christmas gift for my other half's brother, who has a strange habit of smoking outside on the deck in the winter...wearing sandals. he is also a bit of a warcraft addict, so i thought i would have some fun with it

slippers + handmade warcraft appliqu = win!
i also made up a tag for them which i attached in a "authentic" looking manner, giving them a name and some stats in true warcraft item status, but i seem to have forgotten to take a photo of them Sad they were only blues with lots of frost resist anyway, no epix ^___^

thanks for looking

6  it's been a hard day's night in Stenciling: Completed Projects by iamdolleyes on: January 09, 2008 05:32:00 PM
This was part of a christmas present for my other half's older brother, who is a huuuuge Beatles fan. I chose random and hopefully complementary portraits of each Beatle from the Beatles album cover "hard day's night" and tweaked them a bit in photoshop to a more 2 color friendly contrast level. The pillows are 14" squares, and I tried to match the fabric to their couch (although they look quite nice on my blue one too). All indications tell me that he loved them.

all lined up

individual shots:

details, stencils were done with freezer paper in 2 parts (faces first, squares around them after..they were an afterthought - but a good one i think)
paint used was artists acrylic + textile medium + plenty of heat setting

7  WoW Warlock + succubus costumes in Halloween Costumes by iamdolleyes on: November 11, 2007 03:50:29 PM
As the title might suggest, we are a little WoW nuts

we had decided months ago to do warcraft costumes..I was planning on dressing up as my Draenai shaman, and my bf..well he wasn't sure

and he wasn't sure all the way up to a month before halloween >__<

so the story goes, I had already had the feet planned out long ago, and said lets just do a warlock/succy..since i can use the same shoes anyway. Just about everything was made by me, in 2 weeks, on a tight budget. i'm a little down about not being completely 100% game accurate, but that's how it goes when you wait until 2 weeks before halloween and you have a project due the same night you are going to go out!

so pictures..

and...since i built the boots, here are a few in progress shots

step 1. purchase cheap boots and saw off the heels. bonus points for a strong hard plastic arch support. cut and sand hooves in the school woodshop, be sure to avoid explaining what you're doing to anyone or you'll never get away from everyone who wants to talk about WoW!

step 2
glue the hooves on to the shoe with plenty (and i mean plenty) of epoxy 2 part glue. then shove in some more for good measure. make sure you do this OUTSIDE. clamp (somehow) and then when dry, give several coats of fibreglass strand filled bondo all around the joins, down the hooves, and up the arch for extra support and reinforcement

step 3
using blue foam, hack and chop away until you have some nice shapes, glue them onto the shoes and wrap with poly batting, secure.

cover with fabric of choice, and slip on some legwarmers - preferably made from the same fabric, but i ran a little short and it was 1 day before i needed the costumes, so I made do with what i had

in retrospect, i would have used boots that were tighter to my leg, but i think they worked out alright anyway!

thanks for looking

8  Re: 2007 Completed Costumes Scrapbook! (completed project pictures & links go he in Halloween Costumes by iamdolleyes on: November 11, 2007 03:40:22 PM
Alright, well I took my sweet time getting some pictures together..but here goes
I made...pretty much everything from scratch, with only a few things being altered (gloves were painted, top and skirt I already owned)

My boyfriend and myself are warcraft nerds...so we went as a Warlock and his succubus. he's wearing partial T5 gear and my costume is a little more inspired rather than game accurate..but i did it all in 2 weeks on a very tight budget, so there you have it

there are no pics of us together other than crappy ones in the dark club we wore it to, sorry Sad

my man:

and me:

here is a close up on my shoes...which i also made (i am very proud ^___^ )

then for handing out candy i wore the pg13 bits of my costume along with some fun makeup:

ooh scary

thanks for looking!
