1  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / I need help! Big problem! on: December 17, 2012 05:00:19 PM
I have a question for you: my name for my blog(with a custom domain), my FB page, and my etsy shop is DeerAbby. Another girl recently (like, both FB and society 6 were registered in October) made a Facebook called Deer Abby and a society 6 shop under the name.

She hasn't yet changed her etsy shop to suit and I sent her a very polite email asking her to alter her name, but she responded basically saying she "looked it up years ago" and basically "TOUGH". What do I do? I JUST started getting really busy with orders and would not like someone siphoning off my audience!

Here's my email and her response:

Hello fellow Abby!
Hi! I just wanted to say, I love your art and am checking you out on Facebook and Etsy, love your paintings! I sent you this message on Facebook, but sometimes people don't get proper notifications for messages from their Page.
Unfortunately, I wanted to let you know, that I am in the process of registering a trademark for the name Deer Abby, which I have been using for years locally and also for my Etsy shop and blog. I noticed you just opened up a shop in that name just a month or so ago, and would kindly ask that you alter it? I'm so sorry! I just want to avoid confusion in the future, as we both craft and have shops on Etsy, etc.
Previous to this, I was the only shop with this name, and I just wish that you had searched prior to adopting the name! I mean no ill will and thank you for your time.

hello abby cobb.
i appreciate you informing me of your plans to trademark the name
"deer abby" but i am choosing to keep the name that i have been using
on various social forums for years. i did my research with the name
before starting to use it in my etsy shop, gmail, and society6 a few
years go. i did my fare share of looking around since you contacted me
last night and i cannot find any evidence that you have been using the
said name for longer than i have. both your etsy shop and blog were
founded in 2012. my etsy shop has been established since 2009 and yes
i recently did make a fan page with the same name. maybe you should
have called dibs on it all of the years that you were using it
locally? i now know your plans and i thank you for the heads up.
good luck with your craft plans.
deerabby.

3  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Re: Pets & Crocheted items, help! on: October 07, 2012 01:09:10 PM
You will never get all the fur out with an animal population like that. I went to one of your listings, and there is no pet alert on the listing. That's where it needs to be. Many people don't bother to look at general store policies.

Thanks, will do!

Yeah I have a Maine Coon, a Border Collie/Golder Retriever/Black Lab mix, and two Russian Blues. It's so hard! I vacuum every day! And animals LOVE crocheted items like it's catnip!
5  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Pets & Crocheted items, help! on: October 04, 2012 09:09:46 AM
So, I have been selling hooded cowls on Etsy for a month or so, and recently I had a customer say that her cowl had animal fur crocheted into it, and she is allergic! It's so completely mortifying. I've added an allergy alert to my shop info, and I now keep all my items, both finished and in progress, sealed in a bag and then launder them prior to shipping. It's just hard to spend 8 hours in a completely sterile environment. I've offered a complete refund, but was wondering if anyone else has run into this, and have any tips? And how can I get the fur out?! I'm thinking my only friend right now is a roll of duct tape, but even though my yarn is acrylic, will this ruin them? Kinda panicking. I have three cats and a dog, all of whom shed like it's a full time job.
6  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Re: Make yourself a custom stamp for tags & crafts! It's AWESOME! on: October 04, 2012 09:00:10 AM
With a quick google, I fould this site:
http://www.picturemystamp.com/

Darn, I can't remember the name of the place that does this, but you can get a whole sheet of custom rubber stamps for $32 (you design as many stamps as you can fit on one sheet, when you get it, you cut them out and mount them yourself). Disabled folks do the making-of. Ring a bell, anybody? Can't seem to find it at the moment.

8  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Selling Crafts on Etsy.com / Re: The (new) Etsy critique thread! on: September 14, 2012 03:51:55 PM
Hi Guys! I just put up my first listings on the etsy shop!

If you could give me some critique that would be grand. I have no clue.

I'm still trying to figure out how to do international shipping on here, so there's that, and I don't have measurements, which are coming as soon as I find my elusive measuring tape.

THANK YOU GUYS!

9  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Selling Crafts on Etsy.com / Anyone else get this when listing items? on: September 14, 2012 03:48:49 PM
Okay, so I just listed my first items on Etsy, gone are the days I sell my stuff to coworkers and lurk at farmers markets!

I feel so scared, nervous, and excited, that I may throw up or something. Anyone else ever freak out like this? jw
