I have a question for those of you who have been altering  books.  On glossy pages, how do you prime them to take paint?  is gesso a must or will cheap primer from the paint department work as well?  I have a coffee table book with a solid black canvas cover.  all the pages inside are thick and glossy (like photo paper).

I use gesso when I'm doing something more permanent and a keeper as it is quality stuff, but spendy for large projects.

I us interior primer paint when I'm slathering the stuff on! Altered books, paper bags, etc.
Works pretty darned good. Do sand shiny surfaces and most surfaces can use a light sanding to clear finger oil, etc. Then paint. Doesn't take much sanding, a fine sandpaper and a light touch usually will do it.

Have fun.

lol I read somewhere that cats resort back to their instincts when it comes to where they sleep...they like moving around so that they don't become prey themselves...my cats will sleep in the same place for a few days, and then move...but they do have their favorites...

Anyway, it is a really cute bed...maybe you they will use is in a few days...or you can use it as a seat cushion! Grin

I always wondered why they would suddenly abandon the spot they had been sleeping in for days (like between my feet) and move to another "favorite" spot (like on my chest). Your comment explains it! Thanks.

I also have noticed that if you do something for a cat that you think they will like, they have to prove that they are above such presumptions and ignore the present! Unless of course you spike with catnip!

Oh my, fluttermuffin, you have a keeper. What a sweetie and kind man. You had better listen to him. We should all listen to him and give ourselves credit for the wonderful things we can do. He is right after all.

I reported that I mad my own Gel plate and had about 2 seconds to play with it. But here are the first off the press results.

I let the paint dry on the outside edges too much and only had a print down the center. Have to work faster next time. Also see the imprint in the center. I was using the bottom with the tin pan imprint! Turned it over for the rest. Silly me. Patterns were made with pumpkin carving kit plastic cutter thingies and the edge of a palette knife.

The next bunch were for a birch trees in winter series. I will be water coloring over the base for these. The middle one was the first, the bottom was the second off the same paint and just exactly what I was hoping for. And the top was just the remaining paint on the brayer. I used my finger and the end of paint brushes to create the trees. The colors were blue, off white and a bit of silver.

So much fun. I tore the bottom a bit with rough handling (almost dropped it onto a fur covered carpet) so I will try to melt again. I love the technique and can see these ending up in my next bound journal.

I'll be ready to send....but I just pulled a perfect background on my new home made gel plate for a 4x6 piece. I'll paint up that and I may switch at the last moment. Saturday morning will find me at the post office.

I also teach adults computer skills. Microsoft Office and Adobe products. I always learn new stuff when teaching. And they pay me to do so!

My brain is a stew of ideas. I may have to continue this class indefinitely just for the creative punch.

I made my gel plate, it came out great. I pulled two prints just before lunch and have not gotten back to it. Too many deadlines today. I love the wiggly thing.

By the way, I traded all my broken plates and pottery that I had been saving for a box of wood blocks and scraps. We have a kamikazi cat. He's broken all kinds of dishes lately and I was saving them for mosaics or maybe his headstone if he keeps this up, but realized that I really will never do it, just doesn't float my boat. But my stained glass making friend is now into mosaics and took all the bits and pieces off my hands. Her husband does wood working and now I have all these little blocks of wood. Yummy.

Mine is sent....another international, at the mercy of the postal service send. It was hard to part with the little ____ after all this time. Well, I know it's off to a fine new home.

Now to haunt the mailbox for mine..........

The bird nest texture card is made from milk weed pod. I was digging wood out from under snow a few weeks back and saw the dried pods with some of their silky, fly in the wind seed fluff still on them. It's a weed plant in the mid and eastern US. We always let some grow to attract Monarch butterflies, the caterpillars love to hang out and eat their way into butterflyhood on milk weed.

Here's a bit better picture. It was hard to get a good picture, yes, craftster needs to upgrade to the 3D version. How cool would that be?

I gave my first Art Journaling class last night. 14 grown women. I had all kinds of supplies, papers, pens, pastels, glue, paint, etc. etc. piled on the tables and they could not wait to get down! We had so much fun and I forgot to say half of what I had planned....probably perfect. One woman, a friend of mine who is a wonderful artist, said, "I really needed this."

Many did collage, some painted, some drew with markers, and all had something started by the end of the evening. We will be meeting next week. I started a blog to keep weekly support going.

For me, my mind is full of ideas. I have so many things I want to do! I needed this class too.
