It's hard to get annoyed when my research consists of getting paid to read books all day. But yeah, some of the questions and comments you get from people can be surprising. If I had a dollar for every time someone assumed that doing a PhD only takes a year or two...

I'm so happy with how this turned out. I'm working on a PhD, and this is one of those questions that we all ask each other all the time, even though the answer is almost never "Brilliantly! I get up every day chomping at the bit to transform my field, nay, the world!" This is a dream answer for those times when someone's only asking so that they can feel better about how little they've accomplished when they hear you've done even less.

I made the pattern with pencil crayons and paper this time, instead of a program. I was originally intending to continue that green stripe out to the edges and make a circle around the rim, but that turned out to be too hard, so I improvised some flower clusters to fill the space.

Gave it to a friend in my program, and she loves it. Grin

This is fabulous. Just fabulous.

Thanks again for that link, Listessa! I'm playing with the program and really like it so far. Out of all the conversion software I've tried, it's the best for converting a simple graphic design. I have a five colour logo I'm stitching, and it only turned the five colours into 17, not 80.  Cheesy Combining similar colours to simplify the pattern is also pretty easy.

Ooh, thanks for the link. I'll check it out. I've been using Jennifer's Cross Stitch, which is a free program, but it's only for image conversion and I want more pattern-building capabilities.

PatternMaker has a four-day free trial, but it says the download version isn't compatible with Windows 7. I assume that's also true of the trial? You have to buy the disc for it to work with recent versions of Windows.

I'm hemming and hawing about picking up PatternMaker Pro. Does anyone who has experience with it want to weigh in on whether it's worth the money?
I downloaded the PC Stitch trial and can't stand it. I find it very unintuitive, don't like the libraries, don't like the font selection, etc etc etc. PatternMaker sounds better... worth taking the plunge?
