1  COOKING / Dessert / My first EVERYTHING cake! on: June 07, 2010 10:44:46 PM

So after some Craftster creeping, countless hours of Ace of Cakes watching (NOT Cake Boss tyvm) and psyching myself up I made this cake. It's my first time with fondant, butter cream, chocolate piping, making a filling and carving a cake... pretty much the only thing I made before was the actual cake as it came from a box (Didn't want to risk the actual cake tasting bad if I failed at decorating it haha).

The Back Story:
It was my friends birthday and she was having a sizable shindig of a birthday and she was paying for all the food herself (!!!) so I volunteered making a cake. I didn't want to fuss with transporting layers (I live out of town and I didn't know if I was taking a bus) and so I thought a stable one layer would be best. Paula (The birthday girl) loves to surf so I thought that would gnarly!

The Construction:
I made the ganache filling earlier in the week using this recipe http://www.recipezaar.com/recipe/Whipped-Chocolate-Ganache-Filling-or-Frosting-106954 cause it said I could finish it later. I also made the marshmellow fondant earlier in the week too..YAY Riverwatson! For the actual cake I used 3 boxes of cake mix and divided them equally and used 2 9x13 pans (well the same one twice haha) used one in the middle and carved out the shapes for the front and back using cardboard templates I sketched out. When it was time to cover the cake I added my colour to my pre-made fondant, I used the Wilton Garden Tone 4 Icing colour in Delphinium Blue.... SO MUCH KNEADING! NEVER AGAIN! I only used that instead of the gel everyone raves about because I had them in my cupboard. Then on to the piping basically found an image of a couple hibiscus flowers and used the "Hawaii Lover" font from dafont.com for the script and free handed the fins (I realize they are a tad too big for the scale of the board but meh it's more chocolate haha) here's a closer shot of the chocolate. It says "Happy Birthday Sweet P" and sadly the chocolate bloomed a bit when I wet down the fondant to stick it on:

And yeah I garnished with a couple shells I had around the house and some flowers from a fake lei (I gave Paula a matching one to wear at the party Smiley ) and the 'sand' is actually ground up sugar and cinnamon! I lucked out and found like a pepper mill that had them both in it at the dollar store! I used 2 mills and it made my hands raw turning the blasted thing I had to enlist a friend to help! haha and yeah the birthday girl LOVED it and it was the talk of the party I'm really pleased with it for a first attempt   Grin

Here she is again and if you have any questions, comments, critiques I would be glad to hear them!

Just me?  Undecided
3  POTTERY, CERAMICS, POLYMER CLAY / Polymer Clay: Discussion and Questions / Question about baking... on: March 26, 2010 12:17:41 PM
Does sculpty have to be hollow like clay does before firing/baking? I have a piece that is around the size of a spool of thread and I am dreadfully afraid of it exploding! Shocked
I used to be into ceramics when I was younger and certain things have been engraved into me haha It's ready to be baked but I wanted to be sure before I do so.

THANKS!

(I know I asked this in the "ask before posting" thread but I'm a little impatient Lips sealed

Sign-up date range: Nov.6 -Nov.13th
Date to send item by: Dec 22 2008

Limited to a certain number of people? (optional): No

Restricted to people who all live in the same country? No

Swap Organizer himself/herself meets these conditions:
- Has fully read the Swap Info Guide: YES
- Has successfully completed two swaps as a participant: YES
- Is not organizing more than three swaps right now: YES
- Will recruit a co-organizer or give all details to a Swap Moderator if this swap has more than 25 participants: YES

Swap Organizer will check each participant to make sure they meet these conditions:
- Has been a member for at least one month: YES
- Has posted at least 15 times: YES
- Has completed one swap successfully before signing up for multiple swaps at a time: YES
- Is not currently signed up for more than five swaps: YES
- Does not have any negative feedback: YES

Additional Rules (totally borrowed from Miss Violacious & fyberduck and completely stolen from the first House swap haha Wink ):
1. If this is your first swap please read: (http://www.craftster.org/swapsinfo.html) to find out how to ship your item and other details about participating in a swap.

2. Please bookmark this thread and/or post here. All updates will be made here and this will help you to keep up with everything.

3. I will be giving feedback in the following way:
-  Great Swapper: For those who follow all the rules.
-  Good/poor communication:  Went above and beyond or below and within the call of duty to keep the organizer informed.
-  Sent late/early: Three or more days late or early.
-  No DC number: Failed to comply with the rule about using a delivery confirmation number for packages within your own country.
- Didn't post pictures: failed to post pictures of what they received without an adequate explanation to their partner
- Didn't send within the guidelines of the swap: Didn't send enough items, sent too many store bought items instead of handcrafted, or clearly didn't put in enough effort. Borderline cases won't get this feedback, so if you look at the other galleries and read the guidelines you'll be fine.

4. Lateness is okay, stuff happens, but sending more than a few days late will risk a feedback notation, and not being communicative with myself and your partner will risk a poor communication note.

5. Send unto others as you would have them send unto you. Do some research on your partner. Check post history, signature, and profile links for little details that will help personalize your package. It's like picking out the perfect present for someone, and it's lots of fun!

6. Everyone who is sending a package within the boundaries of their own country is obligated to use a delivery confirmation number. This is for your own protection, and it's Craftster's rule, not mine. If your country makes it prohibitively expensive to use delivery confirmation or tracking, even when sending packages domestically, PM me and get permission not to use it. Otherwise, if you aren't shipping across borders and you don't use one, it will be noted in your feedback. If you are excused from using one, you must save your receipt from the post office.

7. It's a damned good idea to take a picture of your package before you send it.

8. PM me and your partner with your DC number when you send. PM me and your partner when you receive, and thank your partner. Post pictures in the gallery within a reasonable time afterwards.

9. I am a complete and total hardass about posting pictures of what you receive if at all possible. If you don't have a digital camera, you can still join the swap, just make sure your partner knows about the lack of picture taking ability early on, so that they can take all the pictures they want as they go. I've discussed my feelings on the importance of swap package photos here. Swappers who don't post photos and don't sufficiently communicate about not doing so will have that reflected in their feedback.

10. I'll be adding feedback to everyone's profile after each person has sent in their questionnaire and has been checked out.

Details of swap:
This is the swap for the House M.D. watchers, House M.D. lovers and House M.D. fanatics. 6  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / What's with Burton and wedding dresses anyways? *costume help* on: October 12, 2008 06:04:06 PM
So for a lead up to Halloween my friend is having a Burton Ball and I am waffling back and forth between Emily and Lydia and I had a few questions about wedding dresses...

1) Can you actually wash a wedding dress with out it coming out wonky? I worked in a Drycleaners and I know people paid big bucks to get them done professionally so that has installed some DIY fear into me.
1a) If I wanted to dye it can it be soaked (and not lose shape etc)?

I'm a little nervous to dive into this one most dresses I've found (for cheep) are like 3-7 which I am (very) much not. So it's kinda a one shot deal.If any of you have some insight or first hand experience I would be greatful...THANKS!  Wink

10  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / soup you can make with stuff on hand on: January 15, 2006 11:08:55 PM
I'm sure you have all of these ingredients in your kitchen to make this soup-er vegan tofu chowder hehe i kind of winged it so i'll try to remember what i put in

1-large can of tomatoes undrained (i used whole you can use diced if you have it)
1-regular can of tomatoes undrained
1- can of corn drained
1-small onion chopped as big or small as you like
20 sprigs of cilantro cut as big or small as you like (you do always have cilantro on hand right? Wink )
1/2 a pack of tofu
2 stalks of celery chopped as big or small as you like
vegetable broth i just kinda eyeballed it just to give it a wee bit more flavour and broth

i boiled it covered for about 45 mins and simmered uncovered till the celery was no longer crispy it made quite a bit of soup i can live off of it all week
 Cheesy
