51  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Vintage Halloween Swap 2015 (signup Closed sendout Sept. 9) on: August 17, 2015 09:30:16 AM
You guys ARE fast, i had to double check the send date! I spent the weekend at "Tiki Oasis" instead of crafting (although I did make some crafty stuff to wear for the event), so now back to the swap! I'm having a little trouble locating an item that I need for the item, and am frantically searching the internet for someone who posted something I can use for an alternative (LOL was that vague enough??) No worries though cause the send date is still a couple weeks away so even if i have to completely start over, I have plenty of time!

I usually spend the most time planning...cause I have to scale down..my first idea is always like "I will build the empire state building out of vintage lollypops hand colored by fairies"...and then after searching for a couple days for fairies with any coloring skills (all they want to do is frolic darn it!), reality kicks in and I start figuring out time/budget and my skill level (I tend to think "how hard can it be to (insert thing here)?"...ie "how hard can it be to learn to how to make stained glass windows? - I have 2 weeks - I'm sure I could learn and make some amazing cathedral style vintage glass for my partner in that time"...no Clarissa...no you can't...it IS that hard, and you have no supplies, no skill and no time...

And then I think of something that I can execute awesomely and off I go~!

Spent yesterday morning scouring thrift stores for just the right "trash" to turn into treasure ;-).   (Is it just here, or are thrift stores everywhere starting to price their trash like it's already treasure?)

Not just "here" (where ever here is), but here in California (which may be where your "here" is too), it's like that too. takes some of the fun out of discovering something awesome, if they end up charging an arm and a leg for it.

Talked to my partner! Smiley

And may I "third" the love of Young Frankenstein?!?!

It's quotes frequently end up in my conversation - alas usually I'm the only one who gets them Smiley

56  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Re: 8-bit Boyfriend on: August 06, 2015 11:08:55 AM
Thanks all!!!...Yeah, he ended up i think 2.5 inches tall (fit perfectly in a 3" frame) so I'm happy with the detail amount. The SO apologized and said he was just teasing about the tattoos - he knows how awesome my crafting is and thanked me very much.

LOL at Corporate Disguise - it's funny cause it's true! Smiley

The only thing is he has tattoos all down his arms, and I couldn't figure out a way to put that in. I thought about using a sharpie and drawing them, or perhaps using a strand of black in the flesh tone to represent the tattoo lines, but ended up doing neither and just left his arms bare - which I think fit the whole "8-bit" theme better...the first thing he said upon seeing the stitch is "where are my tattoos???"
For future pixel people, does anyone have any suggestions how I might do tattoos? or was I right in just excluding them?

My SO got promoted into an office job and I wanted to make a little something for him to put on his new desk. He loves classic video games, and I remembered my mom (30 years ago) doing personalized pixel-y people cross stitch when someone got married, or had an anniversary or an addition to their family.  (My grandma still has one framed of all her grown up children). I called my mom to see if she still had the basic pattern, she laughed - apparently she has cleaned out her craft pile in the last 30 years-but suggested I google it. Found a basic pattern here http://www.marthastewart.com/857131/cross-stitch-family-portrait which seemed almost exactly like what she used to make. I had to wing it on the accessories but I'm super happy with how it turned out!

In addition to video games - he likes beer, music (records) and the Houston Astros (which is the logo on the shirt). He always wears a plaid newsboy style hat which was the hardest to figure out how to replicate in squares. His beard is whiter at the center and his hear whiter nearer the ears, so for those few stitches I added a strand of white.
