21  03/25/09 - Craftster's Sewing and Sewing Machine Survey in Latest News by leah on: March 25, 2009 09:39:07 AM
Howdy all!

We would love to hear more about your thoughts on sewing and sewing machines. So we created a quick, painless survey with just 22 questions. With all the amazing projects posted on Craftster, it's helpful for us to occasionally step back and do surveys like this to get a handle on which way the wind is blowing. So that's a big part of the reason for this survey. The other big reason for the survey is that we like to arm ourselves with good information as we approach advertisers that we think will be a good fit for Craftster.

So we hope you'll help us out. Below is the link to the survey:

click here to take survey! survey is done! thank you to all who participated!

And as a thank you we'll pick five random survey participants to win any item of their choice from our Craftster Shop. If you want to enter the drawing you can just put your email address the first text box on the survey. This is optional. (U.S. and non-U.S. peeps are eligible!)

22  Product Review Suggestions in Craftster Itself by leah on: March 13, 2009 02:42:04 PM
Call for Product Review Suggestions!

Are there unique tools, glues, paints and gadgets you'd like to see reviews of here on Craftster? Let us know!

When we hear enough demand for any one idea, we'll do what we can to get our hands on that product and review it (with lots of pics and information!) here on Craftster.

Reviewers will be chosen from a pool of people including Craftster's Mod Squad and Friends of Craftster. We'll send out a PM to these two groups whenever we have a product to review and then choose randomly from those interested in being a reviewer.

Suggest products here in this thread. If possible, please include a URL to the manufacturers website so that others can easily click and see what you're talking about. And feel free to just reiterate your interest in something that's already been suggested.

P.S. Don't feel like you need to read the whole thread to see if something has already been suggested. Just suggest away!

Update - 3/1/09 - The entry folder is here!
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?board=421.0

Your challenge this month is to craft one of your favorite songs.  It doesn't have to be your #1 favorite song.  Just choose one of your favorites and get crafting with any technique of your choice.  Your project could be a literal or figurative interpretation of the song you choose.  The possibilities are endless for this challenge!

Your craft can be based on just one line of a song that you love. Or the entire song. Whatever you choose, perhaps you love it because it's funny, clever, inspirational... However you want to approach this challenge is up to you!

Here are just a few examples:

Your song for this challenge could be something many of us are familiar with, or it could even be a song you've written and always wanted to share to the world.  Be sure to include the title of your song in your post.  If it's a personal composition, be sure to share the title of your song and some of the lyrics.

Perhaps you've got the perfect song in mind already. But if nothing is jumping out at you immediately, keep this challenge in mind as you listen to music over the next week or so and see if something clicks for ya!

Rules:

  • Post your craft during the period of Mar 1 - Mar 5 2009. No sooner. No later. On Mar 1 there will be a special folder created for entries.
  • Voting will happen from Mar 6 - Mar 12 2009.
  • Each participant can enter ONE project. (Although your entry can have multiple components to it.)

Originality:

It's probably impossible to know whether your project is 100% original and has never been posted on Craftster or made by anyone else in the past.  But if your project was definitely inspired by something you've seen before, then just give credit to that project.

Prizes:

At the end, I'll set up a poll right here and the first place winner will get...

(1) their project in the Featured Projects area
(2) their project in the Craftster Blog

And this prize (winner can receive prize in U.S. or non-U.S.):

Any one item from one of Craftster's online shops!

We hope you enjoy taking a look at this round up of "the best" projects of 2008 or perhaps a better way to describe them would be "a bunch of totally kick-ass projects out of tens of thousands of kick-ass projects!"

Can't wait to see what clever ideas you all came up with!

The New Year is here and, love 'em or hate 'em, we've all got some got some New Years Resolutions, right?! Your challenge this month is to craft something that helps you with any of your New Years Resolutions.

  • How about a beautifully decorated inbox and outbox system to help keep on top of the endless paperwork in life?
  • Is your resolution to do more crafting? Make or decorate a calendar with your crafting goals that you want to achieve!
  • Trying to stop smoking? Maybe a handmade punching bag?! Tongue

Even if you're not a "resolution kinda person," whatever it is you want to try to do better or differently in 2009, craft or construct or embellish something to help reach that goal!

Note that this this challenge is meant to be something you make that helps you achieve any resolution or anything you want to do better at in 2008. So if one of your resolutions is to make a certain craft project in 2008 -- like to knit a sweater -- that in and of itself doesn't fit the theme. But as an example perhaps instead you could create a calendar that helps you accomplish that sweater and can be used for other projects you want to have stay on track!

Rules:

  • Post your craft during the period of Feb 1 - Feb 5 2009. No sooner. No later. On Feb 1 there will be a special folder created for entries.
  • Voting will happen from Feb 6 - Feb 12 2009.
  • Each participant can enter ONE project. (Although your entry can have multiple components to it.)

Originality:

27  12/16/08 - New Feature - You can now mark images as "mature" in Latest News by leah on: December 16, 2008 10:35:07 AM
Hello all,

From now on, if you post an image that you think might be offensive to some people, you can wrap it in the tags:
Code:
[matureimg][/matureimg]
Rather than the normal tags:
Code:
[img][/img]

(There's also a button for these tags which looks like the normal img button but with a red X on it.)

This is what will happen if you do this:

GUESTS (people who are not logged in) will see this icon and explanation:

MEMBERS (people who are logged in) will see the "mature" image by default but you can go to your Profile and go the Look and Layout section and change this setting if you'd like mature images to be blocked.

I want to make it really clear that we don't allow outright pornography, hate, racism, etc of any kind. And we very rarely get anyone posting anything like that. What this feature is for is the occasional project image with swear words, hanky-panky-themed Wink (but not pornographic) images, etc.

We also don't want anyone to think that just because we mark an image as mature, that we personally are offended by it. We'll be as liberal as we possibly can and only mark images which are the type that we tend to get some complaints about.

We want Craftster to remain a place where edgy (but tasteful) content has a home.

Thanks for reading!

Leah

A copy of the new book Knitting for Good!: A Guide to Creating Personal, Social, and Political Change Stitch by Stitch by Betsy Greer of craftivism.com.

about this book (from the publisher)

In the last five years knitting has undergone a complete transformation. Once considered a grandmotherly craft, knitting is now embraced by new generations of young, socially and politically conscious crafters. For these new knitters, their craft represents much more than the finished project; their knitting is a way to slow down in a fast-paced culture, subvert producers of mass manufactured merchandise, embrace the domestic, connect to people in their community, support communities across the globe, and express their own personal style and creativity. Betsy Greer, creator of Craftivism.com, has written the handbook for this new culture of knitters. By highlighting the subversive, revolutionary, and political aspects of knitting, Greer shows readers that knitting can be a profound way to:Connect to ourselves by embracing the personal and meditative aspects of knitting;Reach out to our community through sharing our skill and through charity knitting; andSupport others across the globe by using knitting as a form of activism and expression.

She offers musings, thoughts, tips, stories, and step-by-step projectsall in support of the belief that every time we knit we have the opportunity to create positive change in the world.
