471  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Mother's Day / Re: proper on mothers day? on: July 20, 2005 11:18:13 AM
Here's something neat I clipped from an email I got regarding roots/true meaning of mother's day, especially fitting for pacifist hippie moms like me, so maybe fitting for your BF's hippie mom. Maybe this will give you an interesting angle for doing something for you BF's mom if you want to, which, by the way, is optional for you in my understanding. Many children don't even do anything for their own mothers, sorry but true. You'd be super-nice to do something, anything for your BF's mom too!

Monica

"To All My Mom-Friends:

I never knew this before, but Mother's Day started out as a day to
honor women's public activism -- before Hallmark and the florists got ahold
of it, that is.  In 1870, Julia Ward Howe proclaimed a day of protest in the name
of all the women who had lost their husbands and sons to the carnage of the Civil
War.

As a mother myself, I feel the need for a peaceful world on a very real
level.  I'm sure you do, too.

This Mother's Day, I will participate in "Mother's Day for Peace," a
family event
at Milwaukee's Lakefront...."

(I deleted the rest being that it's obviously local gathering info)

Well here in good ole England we're told that Mothers day was the one day of the year when servants in big houses got to go home and see their parents, and that that's why we celebrate it...

477  U.K. AND IRELAND / ENGLAND / Re: craftiness in england ( hartlepool, newcastle area ) on: July 13, 2005 12:36:33 PM
One good thing about hartlepool is the football (soccer) team. Well. Semi-good. My brothers and Dad support them. I agree with the others - Hartlepool isn't exactly the centre of the universe! There are a few good craft shops around - hobbycraft is in washington which isn't so far away, and there are a few good ones in Darlington.
