1  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Re: Clay & Resin Pendants - Hepburn, Sanrio, etc. on: May 29, 2009 12:07:41 AM
Thanks everyone!  I've been wearing some of them and have been getting lots of compliments. It feels good to make something and have people shocked when you tell them you make your own stuff. They all say they wish they could do it. If only they would just try.....

These are sooo cute where did you get the hello kitty pics? I tried to print some but they never turn out well in resin.

The pics are from the Hello Kitty website, printed at 300 dpi on photo paper. Prior to covering them with resin, I sealed them with a product called Ultra Seal found here:

http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=390&

I love Ultra Seal. I used to use Mod Podge or other decoupage glues, but this one has been really good to me so far. They also sell a resin called Ultra Glo that works well, but I normally use Castin' Craft EasyCast Clear Casting Epoxy because I can get it for 40% off every other week at Hobby Lobby with their coupon ( http://www.hobbylobby.com/weekly/weekly.cfm?page=2 ). And if I bring my son, I can get him to use a coupon too and I can get more stuff!!!!

I just realized that your resin pieces had a black background was that resin coloring or did you use polymer clay??

That's actually a little interesting (well, at least for me)... I originally tried black dye but for some reason it wasn't getting dark enough. I know that you aren't supposed to use too much and it seemed like I kept adding more and more. I was afraid that my resin wasn't going to harden properly or that it was going to be tacky so I left the colored resin a dark gray color. I stopped using dye after that and came up with something else. Acrylic paint! The ones you see in the picture above were done with paint. I didn't fill the molds all the way to the top. After they dried, I painted the backs with black paint (2 coats), while they were still in the molds, and then I added more resin. They came out super black and I was happy with the outcome. I am going to try different colors next time around and I suppose I could use multiple colors and get effects I couldn't get with dyed resin.

I love the Fimo pendants, especially I Love Lucy - the way the red heart resonates with the red pendant. Any secret in getting them to come out so uniformly shaped?

I am a huge Lucy fan so I HAD to make that one for me of course! I used cutters like these:

and then I rounded all of the edges with sandpaper. I started with a medium paper and then went down to a few fine papers after that. It sounds like a lot of work, but its not too bad, especially if you are watching tv. I have a Dremel, but I found that it was easier to get the shape I wanted if I did it by hand because I had more control.

Yay! I've been very crafty lately and I finally had some time to take pics. They are not finished yet, of course. I still need to add the bails and chains to these pendants.

These are clay pendants with images decoupaged on top. I sanded the edges to round the corners and I used resin to seal the images so they are nice and shiny and water resistant:

The white clay is the best stuff ever. Its Fimo clay with glitter already mixed in. It's very forgiving. I've only ever used Sculpey and honestly, I like the Fimo better. It seems to sand nicely too compared to Sculpey and I think I will use it from now on. The red and pink clay is also Fimo with glitter.

I was going to try the whole "transferring images onto clay" thing, but I thought it was a waste since I would probably top those with resin anyway. Why not just decoupage instead? Seems easier to me.

Then I also made some straight resin pendants with candy, glitter, and alphabet beads. I know, its way over done these days, but I love them:

I still need to sand the edges of the resin pieces.

I have TONS more pendants. Like at least 100 or more. I did a lot of wood pendants with retro images, etc. too. Can't wait to finally add chains to all of them and take photos. I hate the fact that there are only 24 hours in one day. Sad
