1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Need ideas for gifts for a bf i don't see much. on: May 27, 2008 11:18:35 AM
I was thinking of making something sweet as a surprise for my boyfriend that i don't get to see during the week. but i don't know what to do! i'm not particularly crafty... i want it to be a surprise and i'd like to mail it to him (even though we live in the same city). any ideas? here's a list of things he enjoys:

1. anything nintendo-related (but i've played up this idea to death already)
2. metal music
3. movies
4. writing/recording music
5. writing stories (but to a lesser extent)
6. reading

i just to make him something special that will remind of me while we are apart. plus, i'm bored out of my mind at work. thanks for anything helpful!
2  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / backyard leaves help, please? on: May 24, 2006 05:17:29 AM
i just started backyard leaves from scarf style. i thought i was doing ok with it, but apparently not. it's turning out horrible!

it's the garter stitch part. i'm thinking that the problem is the slipped stitches. am i supposed to slip kwise on RS and pwise on WS? it doesn't say and i read somewhere that if it doesn't say, you assume it's pwise.

i'm kind of at that in point in the scarf where i wouldn't be too heartbroken to rip it and start again, but also not very pleased to do it. so any suggestions would be much appreciated.
3  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / i've been doing it wrong?! on: May 02, 2006 07:17:10 PM
apparently, yesterday i found out that i was purling the "wrong way". i figured this out when i was watching a video on knittinghelp.com about a certain increase. anyhow, i have been wrapping the yarn around the needle clockwise rather than counter clockwise, making the stitch different. i read the blurb on the website about this so-called "combination purl" and it says that the next row would then need to be adapted to fit this change. i haven't encountered any problems so far, i don't think... but could it really cause trouble? what do i need to change in the next row? and does it look any different or can i just go ahead and change the way i do it now without screwing up my project?

what i'm worried about most is that this is going to be a horrible habit to break.  Undecided
4  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / knit these mittens? on: March 03, 2006 08:25:48 PM
just wondering if anyone's knit these mittens... if yes, what are the resulting measurements? i am looking for a pattern for my unusually small hands. looking for something using dpns (to challenge myself!), that will fit and looks nice. unfortunately i haven't come up with anything. i also don't really want to look into altering existing patterns because i'm sure i won't do that well! anyways, any answers/suggestions would be appreciated. thank you!
5  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Rough Yarn on: December 08, 2005 01:16:33 PM
hello. i'm fairly new to the whole knitting thing. so, please bare with me if this is a silly question.

i have this very large ball of yarn that i want to use. there is so much of it, so i thought i would put a dent in it by making a scarf. the only problem is that the yarn isn't soft at all. i have the feeling that it is going to come out very rough. and this isn't something you want next to your face in the winter. so, is there anything that i could do to make the scarf softer? does using bigger needles or a different stitch work?

thank you!
