21  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / Talk About The Swap Process / Birthday swaps? on: August 07, 2008 02:16:27 PM
Was there not a July birthday swap? I see one for May and one for August, but not June or July.

If there wasn't one, can I run "belated birthday" swap for the June and July babies?

(will confess that I am a July baby and didn't think about until just now!)

22  CROCHET / Projects from The Happy Hooker by Debbie Stoller / Knot ugly shrug! 1st HH finished project! on: August 06, 2008 01:15:36 PM
I'm sooo happy that I finished the knot ugly shrug! Only change was that I didn't do as many rounds for the edge - did 2 instead of 4 because I was running out of yarn. I used one skein of black red heart WW yarn.

23  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Beads: Discussion and Questions / reconstructed tile pendant - in progress - need feedback on: August 04, 2008 01:34:44 PM
I am posting this in the discussion and questions portion of the forum because, while the tile is finished - I can't figure out what to do with it. do I make a bracelet or a necklace or make a semi matching tile and make a set of big earrings.

Made with:

1 bamboo tile taken from a place mat (I have a ton of these tiles since I pulled the place mat apart)
1 vintage letter circa 1941 - date and location stamp from the envelope
3 watch gears
acrylic gel medium (matte)
clear nail polish as varnish

What do you ladies & gents think?

24  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / pretty puffs slouchy hat (yes another one :) ) and some scarfs on: June 26, 2008 01:46:26 PM
I've been a mad crocheting fool over the last few weeks. Here are the results:

Here's the entire puffy hat (using pattern - http://jessicasuzanne.com/craftypants/2007/09/13/pretty-puffs-slouchy-hat-with-pattern/):

Here is an example of my horrible seaming:

and here it is on, from the side:

(Please excuse the cubical shot - I finished this during lunch and rushed to take photos...)
I was running low on yarn so opted for only 3 rounds of puffs

2 scarves I made to practice the ripple pattern:

and a few swap scarves I made...

26  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / blue flower scarflette on: June 09, 2008 01:27:30 PM
Hi Everyone!

I made this for my mom over the weekend:

and here it is on:

these photos aren't up to my usual standards, but at least I have 'em!

Made from this pattern by me: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=222690.msg

I used some yarn purchased at the lovely thrift store down the street that's made to look like home spun. I'll see if I can find the label when I get home. OOPS! Can't find the label anywhere in my apartment! If it shows up I'll update the post.

I have no idea how to spell the fancy name for a ladies decorative pin, but I made one this weekend that I'm rather proud of.

28  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / not marble magnets, but marble tacks! on: April 29, 2008 12:02:40 PM
I was goofing around with my glass marbles this weekend and realized that I didn't actually have any magnets so stuck them on flat top thumb tacks. they've come in handy in my crafty area.

I used some scrap book paper (thank you girlosun_9), regular flat top thumbtacks purchased at Target and some flat back glass marbles.

29  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Macro Challenge - the little lost shell on: April 21, 2008 10:16:50 AM
My first challenge post ever in 5 years on craftster!! woo hoo!

I just got into photography in the last few months, and my primary subject matter is nature in urban settings. I was inspired to concentrate on this subject by the Gutsy Radish stories from Japan

About the photo:

this was taken about a month ago in Los Angeles, CA. There has been no manipulation of this photo except to white balance according to the lighting. Photo was captured using a Canon Powershot G9 .

I don't know what kind of bird lost it's egg for my photo. But my little block of Hollywood is swarming with birds. I have a little humingbird friend who visits in the morning, sitting on the power line about 6 feet away from my patio. I wish I could get a photo of him, but he doesn't seem to like me dashing inside to grab my camera. Wink
30  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / stupid stupid denim! broken needles and frustration :( on: April 07, 2008 10:37:29 AM
ok - I'm trying to sew some denim (I have a ton of one specific type) I'm using polyester thread (which normally is very cranky to begin with for me) and a denim needle for my sewing machine (singer size 2020).

what I'm making are some camera bag inserts for my hubbies camera bag. I get most of the bag completed and I'm just adding some seams up the sides essentially pinching the corner and sewing along the side (1/8th inch) to force them to stand up.

Reference for the camera bag insert - (http://www.tiffen.com/displayproduct.html?tablename=domke&itemnum=720-211)

here's the kicker - I've bent or broken 6 needles!!!!!!

Am I going to fast?
Am I using the wrong needles?
Do I just need to clean the machine?
Is it the polyester thread (I haver to keep the tension pretty high to keep the bobbin thread from piling up)?

for reference I have a basic singer (about 5 years old) I bought at target for about $150 - it has 32 stitches. Not of sure the model number.

any ideas?
