11  COOKING / Dessert / Re: Alternatives to milk for ice cream/ deserts? on: August 10, 2005 03:29:17 PM

I'm an ice-cream fanatic.  It's probably the main thing seperating me from veganism, but the best ice cream i've ever made was entirely dairy free.  I used coconut milk (plenty of fat content!) instead of cream and the flavor was coconut-lime-ginger.  If that sounds intriguing, let me know and I'll dig up the recipe and send it.

That definitely sounds intriguing! Please send! :-D

ok, sorry it took me so long to get back to you. i got this recipe from a cookbook, but modified it slightly (replacing half-and-half with soymilk).  because of the coconut milk, the lack of cream probably doesn't affect the taste much.  i made it and it was delicious (and easy)!

Tropical Coconut Ice Cream

2 cans (14 oz) unsweetened coconut milk
1 cup sugar
1 cup plain soy milk
1/3 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
1/3 cup fresh grated ginger root
zest from 1 lime

1.in a bowl, whisk together coconut milk, sugar, soy milk, lime juice and zest, and ginger until sugar dissolves and mixture is smooth.
2. cover and refrigerate until completely cold or overnight.
3. stir mixture. transfer to an ice cream maker and freeze according to instructions.

mmm....delicious!

Thats so funny, my brother and his wife got rid of their cat around that time on freecycle, prior to the no-pets rule. She is so beautiful and was a great cat but they had never really been cat people, just happened to rescue her. (I wonder if you have her?)
well, if they live in grove city and the cat was an adorable tiny orange & black calico, then it's probaly her (and she's doing wonderful, although still pretty small for her age.)

I just found out about this yesterday.  My boyfriend alerted me to the article in the Columbus Alive.  It's looks pretty cool, but I wish I had known about it earlier so I could badger all of my non-crafty friends into checking it out.

Ordering sizes for women should be like the men, but with inseam, waist and HIPS!

I think that's a fantastic idea!

HA! My bf has earmarked items of clothing I own that he likes but doesn't like other people seeing me in.

hmmm...opposite problem here.  i'll tell him to look for skirts when we're at the thrift store and he'll come back to me holding skirts that'll barely cover my ass.  while i don't buy the stuff, i do appreciate the idea that he wants to show me off.  also, i'm a fan of blunt honesty, and would want for my boyfriend, like any other friend, to clue me in if something was truly unflattering.  of course, it doesn't mean i have to listen to any of them!

I  can never find a bathing suit that fits me everywhere and I like!

that bikini totally inspired me!

I am also inspired.  I have a body type similar to yours and have experienced similar frustrations with bathing suits.  I love my body, but something about mass-produced spandex doesn't work with it. That suit looks fantastic on you!  Did you line it with anything?

also, that 'beach' frame will look so cute with a photo from your next trip to the beach.
Yes, and that should be soon!  Fingers crossed for no hurricanes to the Gulf Coast in the next couple weeks!

My cat going crazy over one of the mice, haha.
Yeah, I made a 'test mouse' and my cat promptly destroyed it through repeated attacks over a couple of days.  (That's why I sent two!)

I'm so glad you liked everything and thanks for a great 1st swap experience.

Okay, here's all the great stuff I got from Petunia0384:

She embroidered and beaded the pillow with the hula girl and decorated a picure frame with a beach theme.  Petunia also sent along a decorated basket filled with soaps shaped like sea shells.  Also, there were a bunch of cute magnets of food items.  Thanks so much Petunia.  You covered my favorites: food, the color blue and the ocean.
