1  Star Wars Vintage Bed Sheet Bag - Swoon Blanche in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by BenaeQuee on: January 06, 2017 12:11:35 PM
My friend asked me a few months ago if I could make her a purse from her vintage (1977) Star Wars bed sheets.  Seeing as they were all cotton, I had no problem with it.  This is a great way to reuse those old sheets that the elastic has all worn out on and can't really be sheets any more.  The best part is, she let me keep the extra fabric!  I am so going to be making one for myself, with a matching wallet  Grin
I finished this in mid-November, but she just got it last week for her birthday - she LOVED it.  Especially since Leia is prominently displayed on one side, it means even more now with Carrie's passing  Cry

2  My Adorable Niece as Ariel the Mermaid in CHALLENGE 116 ENTRIES by BenaeQuee on: November 05, 2016 08:45:14 PM
This year I did not make myself something new, well not entirely, but adorable little niece got something instead!  She dug through my fabric stash and found the mermaid scales and the purple fabric and excitedly announced "This is ARIEL fabric! Can I be Ariel for Halloween?".  I was going to make her Snow White at her original request, but she's a girl like her own aunt, constantly enlarging her costume list.  Since she picked out the fabrics from my stash, I couldn't say no.  She'll be 5 in January, soon I can teach her how to sew as well Cheesy
Now, I couldn't just make a costume, a girl needs accessories too!  I made her a seashell tote bag to gather her Halloween candy in, and a coordinating hair flower with a starfish and Swarovski rhinestones (no plastic stones here, I busted out the good stuff for her!). My sister-in-law picked up a red wig for her to help finish off the look.  I was worried she wouldn't last with the wig, as I know how annoying they can be, and 4 year-olds aren't exactly up to dealing with annoying things for the sake of a costume lol.  She kept it on and loved it!
I used Simplicity 8098 with some modifications. I turned the shells sideways on the bodice to mimic Ariel's, added a peplum to the bodice waist to hide her belly as she gets taller, and added tulle for the fin instead of fabric.  I had a 40 yard bolt laying around, I used about 2 yards for the fin. I drafted the tote bag pattern myself and made the shell applique on the front from a shiny blue spandex, pellon flex foam, and patience.  I used the applique stitch on my sewing machine to seal the edge of the shell, and then used a straight stitch (along the edge of the app stitch) to sew it to the bag front.

3  Damask Wars Barrel Purse - Swoon Blanche in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by BenaeQuee on: October 28, 2016 09:15:53 AM
I LOVE this Damask Wars fabric!  I want to make everything from it, it's such a perfect and simple design!  Since my birthday is in a little over a week, I decided to try and treat myself and made this bag.  I needed a simple black bag (and nerdy) in my wardrobe, and this fabric was the perfect answer.  I added silver glitter mirror canvas from MiKriworld Craft Supplies to make the fabric pop.  I can't wait to take it out this weekend and show it off!

4  Damask Wars Dark Side Vanity Case - Swoon Olive in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by BenaeQuee on: October 26, 2016 07:03:30 PM
I'm in love with this fabric from Knitorious Fabrics (Damask Wars - Dark Side) and this Swoon pattern (Olive).  I've had Olive stashed away for a while now.  I kept pulling her out to make something and was never happy with my fabrics and put her away for another day.  Along came the Damask Wars fabric and I KNEW I finally had a reason to sew her up!  I made this the Heavy Woven Damask Wars, black kona cotton from Joann, and a grey cotton with silver stars from my stash (might be from Joann?).  The handle is made with silver Glitter Mirror Canvas from MiKriworld Craft Supplies.
This pattern was a joy to sew, it was very easy to put together and cut.  I look forward to actually trying some other fabrics now that I know what it looks like.

The front features a slip pocket!

The handle is silver glitter vinyl with a cotton lining (I was low on vinyl).  The handle connectors are riveted to the gusset after being sewn securely.

I put my tag on the inside, as it just didn't work outside.  It would have covered Boba Fett's head on the back Sad

5  Wonder Woman Crossbody Purse - Swoon Rosie in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by BenaeQuee on: October 06, 2016 03:31:55 PM
I've been pondering this one after making the Batgirl bag (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=450016.0).  I made the Wonder Woman barrel bag, a wallet, and a tote bag, a crossbody only seemed a natural next direction Wink

You can vote for my bag in the Pattern Review handbag contest! http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/ContestGallery.pl?ContestID=260&vote=21724

The logo is Black HTV and Yellow HTV cut on my Silhouette.  They were then transferred to a scrap of the lining yellow fabric and interfaced with Pellon 808.  The entire thing was carefully handcut by me so that there was a tiny border of the yellow fabric (to sew through).  Even though the fabric was interfaced, I still used fray check on the edges to seal them.  It was then carefully stitched to the bag flap front (before sewing the flap together).

This is my proud moment.  The back of the flap is red cotton twill, and parts of the front are the blue stars.  The bobbin was red thread and the top thread was blue.  When I hit the glitter vinyl, I ended the blue thread, pulled it through to the back, tied it off, and switched to the red.  It was a bit more work, but totally makes this look much better.

6  Doctor Who TARDIS Ukulele Bag in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by BenaeQuee on: September 28, 2016 07:42:25 PM
Last week I got a Ukulele. I still have yet to name it, but it's purple and pretty and killing my fingers LOL I knew it needed a home of it's own, rather than living in the cardboard box from the manufacturer.

I set out to either draft a pattern, or find one, to make a case for it. I wasn't happy with the pre-made ones on Amazon, they just didn't speak to my personal tastes. It had to coordinate with my Uke, be geeky, and be a sturdy case - not a flimsy bag. I found a pattern by SusieDDesgins on Etsy that seemed like a good starting point for me.

A lot of modifications went into this to get it to be just the way I wanted, and I LOVE it <3 I added the backpack straps on the back, copied from the Swoon "Lucy" pattern (zipper on them converts to a single shoulder strap), piping was added to the outside edges (what a pain, but so pretty), and it was sewn with bound edges facing inside, and not showing on the outside (as the pattern called for). I also added Peltex Stabilizer to the front and back, as well as sturdy flex foam to the side gussets for padding and support.

Her pattern, as it is, is a great pattern.  I only modified it because it still wasn't exactly what I wanted in a bag.  Otherwise, it's a perfect pattern for a soprano Ukulele, and very easy to follow.  I'd suggest that you have some sort of prior bag making experience first though.  I would not try to tackle this if you are a beginner sewer.

It's so pretty and perfect for my new Ukulele Cheesy

The lining and handle and straps were made in music note fabric.  I figured it was only fitting.

The back straps were take from the Swoon "Lucy" backpack pattern. I then made small tabs that went over the raw edges of the top and bottoms of the straps to hide them.  There was no seam to sew them into, so they needed to be covered.

The zipper in the middle unzips to convert the strap from a shoulder strap to backpack straps.

I love this lime green zipper for the bottom!

The inside edges were raw, so they were covered in bias binding tape.  I would have preferred that the tape was lime green as well, but I didn't have enough, so I went with what I had, Navy.  It works.

8  1966 Batgirl Costume Inspired Purse - Swoon Rosie in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by BenaeQuee on: August 23, 2016 03:06:53 PM
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this newest bag!  It was a commission for a friend who needed a purse to go with their Batgirl costume at Dragon Con.  We went back and forth and I was given creative freedom to create this.  Seeing as they already own 2 of my bag and several accessories, they knew something awesome was bound to happen.  This is the Swoon Rosie pattern and it was my first time making it.  The pattern looked perfect for what I needed, so I dove right in.  I had to create the bat from Pellon 808 backed yellow cotton fabric with HTV heat pressed on in gold and yellow.  That was then appliqued onto the front flap by hand cranking my machine.
I give you, the batgirl purse you didn't even know you needed or wanted!

10  Star Wars Floral Wars Handbag and Wallet - Swoon Blanche and Pearl in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by BenaeQuee on: August 17, 2016 09:11:01 AM
I'm at it again with Swooning Cheesy  I just love these patterns and how much creativity you can have with fabrics and accents.  I used a cotton woven from Knitorious Fabrics in the limited run Floral Wars print.  I KNEW when I bought it, that this is what I was going to make with it.  It SCREAMS handbag to me!  Of course, I had to make a coordinating wallet as well Wink  This was fussy cutting hell for me.  I had to get all the panels to line up and show off a character (Vader, TK, BB8, and R2D2).  I didn't want to waste precious fabric (especially not at $20+/yd!) and only used the fabric on the fronts of the side panel pockets.  The lining and back part were all in a pretty swirly black I had in my stash.  This saved on my Floral Wars fabric, and I like how it makes the sides pop.  The long sides (front and back) are accented in Black Glitter Mirror Canvas from MiKri World Craft Supplies (AMAZING CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!).  The handles are made with the black glitter canvas on the fronts, and lined in cotton for longer wearing and comfort.  I don't like when vinyl handles stick to my arms in the warmer months (ew).  There is also a long crossbody/shoulder strap made from all cotton, it is removable when not in use and can be stored in one of the small side pockets.
