161  Fun with the remnant bin - my first skirt! in Clothing: Completed Projects: General by dooney on: July 14, 2005 11:49:06 AM
it's made from this beautiful soft cream-colored tiny-rib corduroy and some plain blue fabric, both abouta dollor from the remnant bin. i would have made the whole thing cord but there wasn't quite enough to make a roomy enough skirt. i added panels of the blue at first, but the whole thing was WAY too big (me and my seam allowances) so i pinched the top of each blue panel, flattened it and sewed it that way (see detail below).
front:

the black drawcord won't be there when i finish the skirt, i have a strip of the blue fabric waiting for me to get matching thread so i can sew it into  a tie string
the eyelets are blue, which i really love.

does it not just scream "applique me"? i'm thinking ducks and bubbles maybe...

side/back:

I started out with two panels of the corduroy (front and back), but i ended up cutting both of them in half and sewing them back together. the front one was so i could make the lace-up part (i added a bit of the cord material behind it to avoid undies peeking out) and the back was to make the skirt smaller and to add a slit and some character because it was too plain.

detail of what i did to the sides:

i was afraid the blue would puff out and make my hips look ginormous, but it really hasn't. and i bet if i iron it down it would stay even better.

the best part is that i stayed up until 4:30 this morning without realizing it, AND i really like my skirt.

163  multi-layer w/screenprint ink bleeding? in Stenciling: Discussion and Questions by dooney on: July 11, 2005 07:02:44 AM
okay so i made this:

and if you notice, the black lines that are over the white are messy. the problem was that the white was dry and a little texture-y so when i ironed on the freezer paper for the black, it wasn't down all the way and the black bled. is there any way to stop this? any methods of applying the paint that don't texturize it? (i use a "spouncer" - round sponge brush)
anyone else even have this problem?

i got the sewing machine off a google image search and added the burst in paint shop pro.

if i ever get drunk (which i won't) and get a tattoo (which i won't), that's going to be it.

167  owl anti-stencil in Stenciling: Completed Projects by dooney on: June 28, 2005 07:35:21 AM
yay for messy-haired late-night photo shoots!

i love how this turned out. it was my husband's idea, and when i found this owl, i had to try it.

close-up of the owl:

in the actual picture, the lines are all wavy like that, and i liked it so i cut it that way, but now it looks like the stencil bled, even though this is the best result i've ever had with stencils.

ps- excuse the white by the branch on the right. the freezer paper stuck and i didn't notice. it's gone now.

169  fun fur kitten bed! in Pet-Related Crafts: Completed Projects by dooney on: June 10, 2005 10:00:26 AM
I found the coolest fake fur at wal-mart of all places, and I knew I had to make Rob a bed. The fur is short-ish blue with dots of green that are longer. If you smooth it out it almost looks like stripes. I couldn't figure out how to put the bed together at first, so I had a pile of fake fur on the living room floor for a while and Rob loved it immediately. He would be playing with us and then disappear and we'd find him sleeping in the pile of fur.
Here's the finished bed - I couldn't get Rob to leave it alone, so he's modeling again.

and a top view -

my husband was trying to sleep before work (he works third shift) so I had to keep Rob, our 6-week-old kitten awake so he'd sleep all night and quiet so Paul could sleep. I got out my fabric scraps bag, and this is what happened:

He just sat there and purred while i tied it for him. I can tell he's going to be a good model.
