1  Carnivorous Plant Fabric Wall Sculpture in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by The Raging Sloth on: September 06, 2014 07:02:38 PM
I made this wall sculpture for artsycandice in the carnivorous plant swap. I think it turned out pretty well. It's all machine-sewn and hand-sewn. The structure is made of pipe cleaners and the backboard is wood with fabric stretched over it.

The top green plants are venus fly traps and the bottom purple plants are Pitcher plants. I had the idea to make them crazy-quilt style because Artsycandice and I had a discussion about loving the illustrator Mary Engelbreit. I love Mary Engelbreit for the different textures in her work so I tried to use lots of different prints in the fabrics.

The pitcher plants are hollow all the way through and everything on the sculpture is able to bend and pose so you can open the fly trap mouths or close them.

The flies are made of pipe cleaners and a sort of sheer material. I made the teeth of the venus fly traps more teeth-like on purpose and took artistic liberties on colors on the pitcher plants although there is a purple one that exists.

2  Re: The Carnivorous Plant Swap GALLERY! in The Swap Gallery by The Raging Sloth on: September 02, 2014 09:53:00 PM
I received from artsycandice and OMG... can I just say I love you? lmao. I am so happy! It is SO BEAUTIFUL. It will be hard not posting 800 pictures at every angle so uh, here's five lol:

It's this wonderful wall piece made of fabric! Obviously it is a gorgeous pitcher plant with tons of fun details like the fun little textural elements like the scrunched up ribbons and pieces on the leaves! There are little seed beads sewn all over the piece and pipe cleaners for vines.

Side-view so you can get a good look at its 3-D-ness.

What's that inside it?

It's a little mouse! It ate a mouse. Smiley

And here's the funny little picture artsycandice drew on the envelope, the card, and a fun letter card with V for venus fly trap on it.

This was just so great, artsycandice! I am so happy and I love my pitcher plant wall piece! It is so sturdy feeling. I like feeling the fabrics. Thank you so much!!!

4  Stuffed Sea Turtle Art Doll in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by The Raging Sloth on: August 10, 2014 06:44:35 PM
I made a Sea Turtle for the Under The Sea Swap for gotgrey. I tried to put most of the most prominent details on the turtle with lots of whimsical qualities.

Most of the embroidery is machine stitched however I did the beading by hand.

Here's the underside:

and the whole thing:

5  Re: The Carnivorous Plant Swap (signups 7/23-8/1, sendouts August 30 ) in ACTIVE SWAPS WHERE SIGN-UP PERIOD HAS CLOSED by The Raging Sloth on: August 01, 2014 06:41:30 PM
Since there is a bit of sharing for inspiration going on I wanted to share something I drew a few years ago. I have created work with a carnivorous plant just once. This is an oldie, but a goodie. I drew this for an illustration course I took at the local community college. The assignment was to draw a movie monster in the style of a famous illustrator. I chose Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors and drew it in the style of Mary Engelbreit. I believe it measures 11x17". I used micron and prismacolor markers and prismacolor pencils. This was a labor of love. I put many hours into this piece.

OH. MY. GOD. I didn't know anybody else was THAT into Mary Engelbreit! I LOVE HER and I LOVE this. this is absolutely amazing, Artsycandace!!!!

6  The Griffin's Library in Completed Projects by The Raging Sloth on: June 25, 2014 10:49:46 AM
I made this for my friend Kenny since he is just one of the best people I know. He's super cute and he writes and reads a lot so I made him an altered Altoids tin library inhabited by a griffin in an old vine-covered brick Victorian house.

This is the tin closed. It's textured. You can feel the vines since the vines are made from embroidery thread. I made the house with clay and painted it then covered it in liguid clay.

Here it is opened.

And inside! The right side is 3D and the left side is paper lol.

The falcon griffin is made from polyclay and painted then covered in liguid sculpy. The book shelf was also polyclay and painted. All the books are made by hand out of jackets from his favorite books that were shrunk down then printed out. They actually all have individual pages since I feel like the details matter a lot. If you forgot how big a altoid tin was (which happened a lot to me when I was making it...) here's some comparison to my hand:

7  Cupcakes and Kimono Girls Fanny Pack (picture heavy) in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by The Raging Sloth on: June 22, 2014 08:17:09 PM
I made a fanny pack for my spunky friend Brii! I felt she needed a fanny pack with more personality so I made one for her for her birthday! I have never made a purse before let alone a fanny pack and I think it turned out pretty well even though I was too cheap to actually BUY a pattern of some sort. XD oh well. Picture heavy! Beware! I think my friend is so cute and she totally wanted to model it for me for Craftster so here we go!~

Closed. It closes with a zipper and with some Velcro in case someone tries to pickpocket her then she will hear it because velcrow is noisy!

I put two little pockets in there and one big pocket so four spaces in all to fill!

aaaand Here's Brii!

It has adjustable straps so it can fit well.

Super cute with her fun top!

Brii sees it also makes for a great purse in case she doesn't want to keep it around her waist. She said she is in love with it and she immediately put all her stuff in it. I was SUPER pleased. I am not the best sewer and tend to get impatient so things aren't always even but this turned out much better than expected! Bonus pic; here is the card I made while at work drawn in pen and four colors of highlighters. XD

Thanks so much for looking!

Aaaah! okay I finally have some time! I will post more pictures since you posted, Cmarion3! I am sorry I couldn't post before... eight days of work forever straight. >.< I just love my Nature Spirit doll and the kit is so great! My favorite part of Earthe is her texturing. I think it was done by layering fabrics and then cutting through them strategically? Here's a close up:

Just love it! Such a clever idea. I hung her up on my wall. Here's a close-up of her face:

The face is interesting! I love the lace behind it, and the beads hanging off.

So I love these paper beads! did you make them, Cmarion? I just think this beautiful doll is so crafty and so nature-y and I can only hope you'll like mine as much as I love yours. I also am really excited to use your kit! so fun! Thank you very much!

10  Re: Embroidery Hoopla Round 10 - Places - GALLERY in The Swap Gallery by The Raging Sloth on: May 05, 2014 06:42:54 PM
Haha just got whenindoubtsew's hoop today! Whew! finally! I was getting worried! I am in awe! On my list I said Australia (I plan to go there one day) and only when I sent my hoop did I realize whenindoubtsew is from there! She sent me a lovely Australian swamp hoop or "billabong" with one of my favorite animals; platypus on it!

The trees are Aussie Ghost Gums. So much detail and so much stitching! I am amazed!

Here's a detail shot of one of the Platypi:

She also sent me chocolate with Australian animals on it (australia really has such amazing animals) Here's a group shot:

I love the idea of having Platypi and Echidnas on chocolate wrappers... needs to happen more often here! lol

Aaaand here's my hooplah/crafts wall now!

Thank you so so much whenindoubtsew! This is a wonderfully beautiful hoop and I am so happy!
