How about fabric lanterns, you'd have to use something like christmas lights to light them, but they're pretty...

Thanks guys!

And yes, my avatar was inspired by cakewrecks.

So it's DH's b-day, and he loves cake, logically I make one. It's devil's food cake, with homemade butter cream, and marshmallow fondant. Since we're both huge fantasy geeks, I figured what's better than...A DRAGON!

I sculpted him out of MMF.

The wings were a little problematic, and didn't want to stand up

here's the whole thing.

Lessons learned, it's harder to cover a round cake than a square cake with MMF. I need to get some rubber gloves because my hands are blue (blue mixed with green for most of the draggie)

5  COOKING / Dessert / Re: lavender recipes on: October 11, 2008 04:18:24 AM
Never cooked with lavender, but, inspired by a Dogoba chocolate bar I had awhile back, I'd say chocolate cake with lavender and blueberries would be good.

It tastes like marshmallows, just sweeter. I think it could become too much, but rolled thin, it's great. DH was such a fan that he kept coming into the kitchen and stealing fondant scraps while I was working on the cake.

Great job, the semen looks so realistic, it's kinda squigging me out. (this is a compliment, I just have never had much affection for splooge)

Thanks. This was like some sort of redemption for me, and I'm crazy proud of it. I didn't have much of an issue cutting into it. Cake decorating is one of those things that isn't ment to last, like snowmen and sandcastles. My big problem is not going all crazy making cakes. (I am so going to try a Mad Hatter cake next.)

And suddenly I realize, this whole military wife thing is getting to me. the first thing I thought was: "Oh lookie, comissary sushi!"

Crazy cute folder, despite the fact that it makes me crave california rolls.

I come from a family of cake people, my mom was a cake decorator, had an at home business, and worked in a grocery store bakery, and is really good at it, though she no longer does it for money. My brother went to culinary school, for pastry. And while they've both tried to show me how, I am a total dunce when it comes to icing, despite being the only one of us that can draw. I've been more than a little annoyed that all of my cakes look like they got hit by a truck, even though they tasted great. So I decided to scrap the buttercream, and take a stab at marshmallow fondant.

The funky shiny spots are from covering it with cling wrap before I took the pictures. And it's red, not orange, bad light. I only had liquid food color on hand, so, the red's not as vibrant as I would have liked, something not helped by the red plate. I ended up replacing the water in the fondant recipe with food color for the black, after the fight with red. I used a cookie cutter for the butterflies. I'm very happy with it overall though, seeing it was the first time I used fondant.
