I come from a family of cake people, my mom was a cake decorator, had an at home business, and worked in a grocery store bakery, and is really good at it, though she no longer does it for money. My brother went to culinary school, for pastry. And while they've both tried to show me how, I am a total dunce when it comes to icing, despite being the only one of us that can draw. I've been more than a little annoyed that all of my cakes look like they got hit by a truck, even though they tasted great. So I decided to scrap the buttercream, and take a stab at marshmallow fondant.

The funky shiny spots are from covering it with cling wrap before I took the pictures. And it's red, not orange, bad light. I only had liquid food color on hand, so, the red's not as vibrant as I would have liked, something not helped by the red plate. I ended up replacing the water in the fondant recipe with food color for the black, after the fight with red. I used a cookie cutter for the butterflies. I'm very happy with it overall though, seeing it was the first time I used fondant.
