Aha! Upon further investigation I've figured it out - I was forgetting the fact that you're folding your ribbon over that first tier, which would explain why you fold the rest of it - so it's all the same width.

Perhaps I've missed something, but why do you fold the ribbon in half and then sew it over the seams? Why not just use ribbon that's half the width?

Fantastic tutorial, by the way - I found that pattern on my own as well but your diagram helps SO MUCH!
