11  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Re: A new bag....finally! on: December 21, 2006 07:46:36 AM
It's a magnetic snap and I can only find them at ONE Walmart in my area. I have yet to find them at any fabric store around here. Sad BUT, you can find them online extremely easy. I like them MUCH better than the normal snaps.  For me, they are easier to install and easier to use.

Perhaps this isn't as creative as I thought--my roommate came home and said she saw this idea at a friend's wedding. Oh well. I like it.

15  HOME SWEET HOME / Interior Decorating: Completed Projects / My new shelf unit...idea from "crazy red room" thread on: December 19, 2006 08:08:07 AM
Thanks to SolaceInSleep and his super cool room post, I have my own fabulous shelf unit!

(Ok, I guess I better also thank my dad who whipped this up while I was home over Thanksgiving!)

I'm not too excited about some of the items but I needed to put something in it for the time being.  I really like the old cameras, vases, and black and white photos though...

Any ideas for other interesting/unique objects that might fit a photography theme???

Ok, I pretty much just love and WANT all three.

I agree about gussets, I insist on using them but always get so frustrated when they don't line up.  I"ve started making them a bit too long so I can trim off the excess.

I do too. I usually end up with at least 2 inches to cut off the end. The curve makes it difficult to determine the exact size.  Traditional messenger styles are a bit easier because you can cut them the same length as the front/backs...but then again, personally, I find the corners are harder than the curve. I guess it's sixes. Smiley

That's a great shape and style for a laptop bag. It looks much more sturdy than a basic tote bag.  How far down the sides does the zipper go? Was that difficult to do?

Thank you guys for your comments!

Yes, I did make the pattern. I made it last year and this is actually a newer revised version--it's a bit bigger than the original. The outside pocket, unfortunately, is not really a pocket. This fabric is somewhat finicky when you try to do too many layers so I wasn't sure if the structure would handle an actual pocket.  It does have a gusset that goes all the way around.  And I would like to officially cast my vote in your informal poll: gussets are a pain in my $*#($@&  Smiley

The labels are handmade from Shrinky Dink material. I bet if you do a search for "shrinky dink" on this board, you will find plenty of discussion about them. Smiley This is where I got the idea: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=56668.0

As for the lining always being too small--mine are always too big!!! I've made quite a few bags and this is actually my first perfect fit!  I always cut my lining slightly taller than my outside fabric. I find it easier to alter the lining than the bag itself.

I will try to put together a tutorial sometime... Smiley
