15  CLOTHING / Clothing for Kids: Completed Projects / Another Hello KItty Poncho on: December 29, 2004 12:27:12 PM
I was inspired by this Hello Kitty Poncho to make one for my niece.  I made hers with a hood that has ears and a bow.

http://www.auroraseven.com/alison/craftster/poncho1.gif

The whole things was pretty easy, and i used Michaela*s_Mom instructions to get started.  Everything is a relative size to the person who will wear it.  I kind of just made it up as I went along, so if these instructions seem odd, let me know.

First, you need the measurement from middle of the neck to the wrist for the person this needs to fit.  Fellow craftster Melmelon got that for me from her 3 year old daughter as 17 inches, so I cut a piece of fleece into a circle with a 17 inch diameter.  You then cut a smaller hole in the center for the head, in this case 4 inches in diameter.  Now, to make the hood, these are the basic shapes you will need, and you just scale them to fit your poncho.

http://www.auroraseven.com/alison/craftster/poncho.gif

The bottom of the hood should equal 3/4 of the circumference of the inner hole on the poncho. Cut that number in half to figure out the measurement for the bottom edge.  Cut everything out and split the hood pieces into pairs.  Sew the long curved sides together on each pair.  Then with right sides together, sew the fronts of each hood pair together.  Turn it right side out and fold it in on itself so it becomes a lined hood.  Pin it to the poncho and sew it on.  It doesnt really matter where since your poncho is a circle.

Sew the ears in pairs, turn right side out, and stuff.  Sew these onto the hood where cat ears would be.
Sew the two pieces of the bow together, leaving a space to turn.  After you turn it right side out, stuff it and close the open edge.  Sew it onto the left ear.

Here's the final poncho on the kid, who was a little too excited about Christmas to keep still.

17  UNITED STATES / Massachusetts / gocco supplies in boston on: November 12, 2004 12:28:04 PM
anyone know if i can get gocco ink downtown?  i usually go to pearl or the art supply place in avon, but i am going to be in the copley area sunday and need some ink.  gocco's site says Rugg Road Paper Co. which is on Charles St. anyone been? I fear the pricing may be high due to the area...Maybe Paper Source sells ink?

thanks!

this is an edit -- i need fabric ink.  i just called paper source, and they only have paper ink...i think i am screwed.
18  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Discussion and Questions / Solid Bubble Bath on: October 13, 2004 10:38:11 AM
I am a Lush bubble bath addict, and decided I needed to make it myself or I would go broke.  I did a lot of testing with different recipes, and this one is a combination of many, and works great.  I'll post pictures soon.

Ingredients:
1/3 cup of cream of tartar (you can also substitute corn starch)
1 cup of baking soda
1 cup of sodium laurel sulfoacetate (SLSa)
1/3 cup of glycerin liquid (plus more if needed)
soap coloring - as much as desired
Fragrance Oil - as much as desired (i used about 1/3-1/2 oz)

Tips:
The Sodium Laurel Sulfoacetate (SLSa) is the only ingredient I couldn't find locally.  I bought mine at http://www.bubblesnlights.com.  It seemed reasonably priced and they had lots of yummy fragrances too.  When you are working with it, you need to wear a mask.  It is not supposed to be harmful to breath in, but you will cough ALOT.

As for the coloring, I use powdered.  It was easier to get the color even throughout and it colored the bath water nicely too.  If you use liquid, it will affect how much glycerin you use.

Add a lot of frangrance.  Remember this is going to make enough for about a dozen or so bathtubs full of water.  It'll seem a little overwhelming when you are mixing it, but it will be okay when you slice it up and store.

Directions:
Mix all the dry ingredients together (including coloring if you are using dry).  I used my hands in rubber gloves.  The SLS is a very fine powder, so just swish everything around until it is mixed. Add the frangrance into the glycerine and drizzle both over the dry ingredients while mixing with your other hand.  If you are not happy with color saturation, add more.  When it is all mixed, take a clump in your hand and see if it will hold its shape.  If it is crumbly, add more glycerine.  When it is the consistency of dry play-doh and it holds it shape, you are done.  Now, you can take the whole thing and put it in a soap mold, and let it sit for 30-60 minutes.  When you unmold it, if it does not stay together, just put it back in your mixing bowl and add more glycerine.  If it is ok, you can slice it and let dry for a day or two.  I usually cut it up into 6 slices, the cut those in half. You can also just make it into single-use sized balls or cubes or put it into smaller soap molds.

After it has dried for a day or so, you can wrap it up to store.  It should is supposed to last for 2 months, but it never lasts that long at my house.
To use in your bath, take one of your slices and crumble it into the running water.

I'll try to post pictures tonight of the finished bubble bath.

This is a swap for promotional materials.  You send your promo materials to everyone else, and they will include them in any sales they make.

Items to send:
Promo materials can be anything: business cards, postcards, buttons, stickers, fliers, etc.  You should plan to send enough that each person who signs up can get at least 10 of your materials. So, if 10 people sign up, you should plan for 100.

How will this work:
I will not be distributing the items this time.  Lets try just everyone sending out all their stuff individually this month and see how it goes.

Also remember to read the Swap Info Guide to find out how to ship your item and other details about participating in a swap.
