11  UNITED STATES / Massachusetts / Re: Boston/Cambridge Fabric Stores? on: August 22, 2006 07:02:29 PM
Is the SewFisticated in Dorchester the same as the TwinCities one?  I know it's the same owner, but you know how much other stores vary in a "chain" store environment.

I rarely go to the one in Cambridge, but often go ot Dorchester.

They've got TONS of $1.99/yard suiting fabric, denim, prints, cotton, wool, etc.  Lots of very nice garment fabrics at reasonable prices.  Lots of home decor stuff that I've never really looked at.
I buy zippers (5 cents an inch), buttons, trims there too.

I love it.

I posted this in the MA board, but its not to far for you RI folks to come visit!!!  There's even some RI crafters involved.

If you're looking for something fun to do on Saturday, head over to Somerville for ArtBeat!  Among MANY things happening, there will be a craft fair on Elm & Holland Sts from 11am-6pm.  I'm sharing a few booths with a bunch of crafters:

Wonderland Q
Sewing Stars
Egg-a-go-go
Thimblewinder
Yankee Girl Designs
The Crafty Scientist
Pepperberry Crochet
Coffee-drinker
Perishabe Productions

Our tents will be right in front of Diesel on Elm St.

Magpie will be there too, somewhere, and their store is real close by too!  It is lots of fun, so you should definitely come!

The domain name for BostonCraftMafia.com has been purchased by someone already. I looked at the WHOIS info and this person is in Weymouth, MA and I wrote to the email address listed. So hopefully we'll hear soon what her intentions are for the domain name.

The woman lives just around the corner from me...I can go always go rough her up...
17  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Tips for Participating in Craft Fairs / Re: credit cards at craft fairs? on: April 28, 2006 11:22:07 AM
What information, besides business name, do people typically include on their imprint plate?

Propay charges show on statements with your email address.  In order to help people recognize the charge and prevent chargebacks, you could put your email address on the plate.  Mine also has my address (a PO Box) and the URL of my site.

We're still trying to find a manual card imprinter, which we found one to borrow until we can buy one off ebay (we waited too long).

I got mine from this company:

they were very quick & nice to work with.

i'm pretty sure there won't be wireless internet available at the bazaar bizarre.  there is an ATM on the fairgrounds though!

i use propay.  the fees are very comparable to paypal, but you do have to pay a yearly fee based on which cards you want to take and how much in sales you do.  it was very quick & easy to set up (i did it all in 4 days because i decided last minute before a big show).  i also bought one of the things to make an imprint of the credit card, just as security for myself.  you can process the cards through a cell phone or over the internet.  at the 2 shows i have used it on, the sales i would have lost to not taking credit cards have payed for all of my expenses. on large sales, i processed the card while the person was there.  on smaller ones i just made a pile and called them in when it got slow. i have had no problems, although I was glad i tested it out at home before because you do need to get some info from the buyer like their zip code.
