I know this is a common issue with crocheted rag rugs. I want it to look like this:

but it is too tight: curling up at the sides, etc. I have tried adding stitches, I don't really know where to add them? Do I just stick my needle back in after I stitch one and do it again? How do I know when to add more stitches? What loop do I put my hook in to make a new stitch? This is harder than it looks! I'm using plain cotton fabric, old sheets etc, instead of jersey fabric. Is that why it's doing this?
