1  FIBER ARTS / Dyeing: Discussion and Questions / Help! I want to dye my slipcover! on: March 11, 2006 09:53:07 AM
So... my Ikea couch is currently covered in this: (it's sort of a light chartreuse)

And, I want to dye it a dark chocolate brown.   It's 63% cotton and 37% linen.  Is this even possible?  If I do it myself at home, is there a way to ensure that the color comes out even and not tie-dyed looking?   What products would you recommend?

Or...  Are there places that do this professionally?  I thought maybe cleaners or upholsterers, but I can't find any that advertise dyeing.

Thanks SOOOO much for any help you can give!

Such a good idea...you inspired me to make something for my grandmother (my grandfather just died and I couldn't make it to the funeral--they live in Boston and I live in Portland, OR).

Thanks for the inspiration.  I am sure your mother will love the shawl.
I'm sorry for your loss as well.  My family is in Portland, and I sooooo wish I could go home to be with them.   I'm going home in April for a visit so I guess I will have to wait until then.

An idea for something nice to do, would maybe be to knit a bag and fill it with comfort foods, like tea/coffee, chocolate ect and mail it to her...I know that's a little silly and materialistic, but that might help.
I love this idea!

And to Everyone Else....  thank you all for the lovely comments, you are lifting my spirits.    Smiley

i know it's kinda corny, but it meant a lot that he'll always have a piece of each of us near him...
It's not corny at all, It's a very sweet thing to do.

I agree... NOT corny at all.   I'm in the military as well, so I totally understand what it meant to all of you.

Thank you all for the kind words.  You all have reinforced my belief that hand made gifts are the best especially in difficult times.

dialectic material:  I think your quilt idea is wonderful, and something you should definitely do.   I have some beautiful baby blankets that my Grandmother crocheted for my kids, and I will treasure them always.

Thanks again everyone, take care!

I finished this shawl about a month ago, and was going to give it to my Mom in April for her birthday.  Well, she called me this morning and told me my Grandmother (her Mother) died last night.  My family is on the west coast, I'm on the east, and I won't be able to go home for the funeral.  So, I decided to send this to her now as a BIG HUG from me, because I know that's what she really needs right now.   I just wish I could be there to do it in person instead.   Sad

Have any of you given crafted gifts for sad occasions?

btw, I got the pattern here: http://cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/khs-diam.html?noImages=

I'm definitely watching for this one.  I've got tons of muppet stuff.  I fact, I just found Muppet Caper glasses at the thrift store the other day.

Here's a couple I found...

I think the first one might work the best, and if you don't like the length, just make it shorter.   Smiley
