1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / massive vintage smock -> cute cropped victorianesque folk bolero-thing!!! on: June 22, 2006 04:54:19 AM
Hello all!!

My first successful reconstruction that I might actually wear!!!

Started with a lovely embroidered cotton smock top that I bought from a vintage shop on ebay...Absolutely gorgeous but also really really massive, I don't have a photo of it in it's original state but here's one similar..

I tried wearing a belt round it but it still made me look pregnant. However the embroidery was too cute to get rid of it, so I decided to take it in.

My first major mistake...forgetting that it was made of 100% cotton and therefore totally non-stretchy, I reconstructed it in the normal t-shirt way; aka drawing round a tee and sewing the new shape. Of course, this left me with a top which couldn't stretch over my elbows, let alone my chest! Disaster!!

However, I then had the idea to make it into a sort of bolero jacket, and used the material I cut off the bottom (when cropping it) to make a panel in the front with hook & eye fastenings...Added decorative victorian-style buttons and voila!! Rather quirky but I love it Grin

Pic #2 (in which I photograph myself in the mirror)

Pic #3 (well, why not)

2  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Please help!! Novice at sewing wishes to recreate gorgeous dress... on: June 17, 2006 10:14:28 AM
Dia dhaoibh! (Hello all!)

Well I'd been watching this gorgeous dress on ebay for over a week and determined to win it, I put in a bid with about a minute to spare and my computer decided to freeze up!! So it didn't even register my bid  Cry

Soo disappointed, so I've decided to try and create my own version of the dress...The thing is I've never made an article of clothing from scratch before so I'm not really sure how to start! If all else fails I was thinking of trying to buy a plain dress and customise it. But I'd rather make it myself if possible.

So anyway if anybody has any ideas for patterns, tips, etc, I'd be really happy to hear from you!! I'm still in a period of depression after the ebay incident...

All the best

4  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / unoriginal but hey it's my first *jeans to skirt* - with kitsch flock pattern on: May 21, 2006 08:36:46 AM
Well yes it's been done a million times (and 999999 of them were better than this one) but I had these old jeans which were too big blah blah pretty fabric blah blah...

This is the back...The front's not great, I have to say!! Not horrendous but probably not "I'd wear this out" quality. But hey what can ye do.

5  CLOTHING / Shoes: Completed Projects / blue dolly shoes ... now with bird, bows, stars and pearls! on: February 23, 2006 09:09:31 AM
Ok so this is pretty simple but it's my first attempt at decorating shoes (not counting the sweater boots) and I'm quite pleased with how they turned out!!
No before pics but really they were just plain baby-blue dolly shoes...So I added green bows with pearly beads, and then freehanded stars and a bluebird with permanent pen...How long that'll hold up I don't know but I guess when it fades away I'll do something else to them!

Hooray! Smiley

6  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / vintage roses upholstery-esque jacket fabric to 'sweetheart' shoulder bag on: January 17, 2006 07:16:17 AM
Agh well I forgot to photograph the jacket before I cut it up, such was my enthusiasm to get started!!!
It was basically a blazer-shaped jacket which I bought on ebay a couple of years ago, but it came up two sizes too big. I'd been thinking whether or not to risk trying to resize it but in the end decided just to use the fabric for something else, because it's soooo pretty!
Anyway here is the result, made on my mum's ancient manual (you wind a handle with your hand to make it go!) singer sewing machine...

on my bed : looks a bit wonky in this pic but that's just part of the gusset sticking out on the left.

inside : I lined it with a cotton grocery bag, because that way the handles are already attached and also the grocery bag takes the weight of things inside it, instead of putting too much strain on the rose fabric, which isn't that thick. Also you can see the little pocket there...

on me : sorry for the weird wobbly mirror!!

7  CLOTHING / Shoes: Completed Projects / mmm, fairisle...my take on sweater boots!!! Just use your arms!! :) on: January 15, 2006 07:08:45 AM
I was inspired by jpilgrimd : http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=67859.0

Sooo...

Red canvas 'beach shoes' that I bought because of the stripey bits, but never wore...
+

Gorgeous but ill-fitting fairisle sweater

...

Instead of making tubes out of the body, I simply cut the arms off the sweater (and attacked the shoes too)

Then used uber-strong and uber-stinky glue to stick the sleeves over (what was left of) the shoes

The edge looked a little messy so I covered it with brown binding

I also reinforced the back with stitches

agus...ta-da!!
