Hi J-1982,
I bought them at a store called 'the alaska fur exchange' here in Anchorage. I'm a shooter but not a hunter. I'm not an animal rights guy by any means but I don't like shooting at live targets. The blanket's made of 10 coyote pelts that were whole and and already tanned. I cut off the heads, tails and legs to leave a rectangle 12" by about 30", using as much of each as possible.
It is very cozy and very warm. My wife and I tried it out and could be under it for only a few minutes (its about 70 deg here in AK summer), but I'm sure it will be nice in our -20 winter....

Hi All,
I just finished this project and I wanted to share it. I've been wanting a real fur blanket since we moved to Alaska in 2008 but the cost is prohibitive. My Wife suggested that I make one and since I retained simple stitching skills from US Navy Basic training I decided to give it a try. The furs cost a total of $1600. (professionally made fur blankets start around $2000 and the nice ones can be much MUCH more)
The construction took from April 2010 until July 2011 but most of that time was waiting to buy the hides. Actual time spent was probably only a few days. It's amateurish for sure but it is very warm and thick and looks awesome!
