2  COMPLETED: Fall Challenge: Jalapeno Poppers - Tempura Style! in Recipes and Cooking Tips by Avian Flight on: October 30, 2010 08:10:07 PM
I love to make this appetizer because everyone loves it. It's a spicy, cheesy delicious bite! It may seem like a lot of steps but it's easy (and totally worth it) to make!

Jalapeno Poppers Recipe

Ingredients:

8 jalapeno peppers
Panko crumbs/Japanese bread crumbs (or use regular dry bread crumbs)
Oil for frying

Filling:
4 ounces cream cheese
1/2 cup shredded cheddar jack cheese
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
pinch of salt

Tempura Batter:
1 egg
1 cup COLD water
1 cup all purpose flour

Instructions:
1. Slice jalapenos in half lengthwise and remove stem and seeds (use gloves!!)
2. Mix filling ingredients together.
3. Fill jalapeno halves with filling.
4. Prepare tempura batter by mixing the egg with cold water, then whisking in the flour.
5. Dip filled jalapenos in tempura batter then dip/roll in breadcrumbs, immediately drop into hot oil.
6. Remove when golden brown and let cool on paper towels/wire rack.
7. Enjoy warm!

(use up extra tempura batter with other veggies like eggplant, sweet potato, peppers, etc)

3  Re: Sweat Shoppe Ornament Swap (signups til Sept 25) (send by Nov 1) in ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED by Avian Flight on: September 20, 2010 05:19:05 PM
Here's what I'm offering. I finally made a prototype. I was going to make different animals but couldn't find neutral colored pom poms so I ended up making pink bunnies. The ball is glass with a small opening. Squeezing the bunny in was hard! What do you think?

Edit: I decided to give my partners a choice of critter ball or crochet snowman. Please still submit your choice to organizer as "Critter Ball Ornament"! Thanks.

I received from Megnificent!! The apron is magnificent! We unknowingly used the same fabrics in different colors. This is a very popular print it seems.

Here's the awesome apron Megnificent made (being modeled by my brother).

And here's another picture of the apron I made for Megnificent.

Thanks so much Megnificent! I love it!

6  Cooking Challenge - Celebrating July 4th!- Fourth of July Cherry Pie in Dessert by Avian Flight on: July 08, 2010 05:19:53 PM
I made a cherry pie for this contest! While I think apple pies are more American, cherries are summer fruit so it's more fitting for a July 4th dessert. Plus, there's that fable of George Washington chopping down his father's cherry tree. The moral of the story? It's good to tell the truth! And here's a truth I learned while making this pie, pitting cherries are a lot of work if you don't have a cherry pitter (plus they stain your fingers).  Tongue

I decorated the top of the pie with an American flag to be festive. The stars and stripes are hand cut! Here's the pie before baking:

Fourth of July Cherry Pie

Ingredients:

Filling:
1.5 - 2 lbs sweet cherries, pitted
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup water
~2 Tbsp corn starch

Crust:
1 1/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
8 oz (1 stick) butter, cut into cubes and chilled
~5 Tbsp ice water
1 egg, yolk separated

Instructions:
1. Using a food processor (I used my fingertips because I don't have a food processor), pulse the cold butter pieces with the flour, salt and sugar until it looks like soft bread crumbs.
2. Add the water 1 Tbsp at a time until the mixture sticks together when squeezed.
3. Form into a ball and use immediately or wrap and refrigerate. If using immediately, roll out into pie dish or press into tart pan. Brush crust with egg white and refrigerate until needed. Save about a handful of dough for decoration.
4. Mix all filling ingredients together in a medium pot. Heat on medium-high heat until mixture thickens. Remove from heat and place into crust.
5. Using saved dough, roll out and cut stripes and stars. Place onto pie. Mix the remaining egg white with the egg yolk and brush onto dough. Sprinkle top of pie with sugar.
6. Bake at 375 F until top is golden brown and filling is bubbling, about 30-45 minutes.

And here is the pie after baking:

It was delicious! I hope you like it!

SeaMaiden75 was super kind and generous to send me a gift since I wasn't swapping. She made extras of the magnets she made for her partner so I got a set too! Thank you so much!! They're so awesome! My favorites are totoro and the hamster with the soot sprites.  Cheesy *hum totoro theme song*

8  Re: Bento Swap Round 4 Gallery in The Swap Gallery by Avian Flight on: June 22, 2010 10:29:50 PM
I finally got my package from Dancer4Ever after it got held up and redirected by usps! Here's a picture of the box.. you can see it first got identified as the company my BF works for which prompted it to be redirected to Google because the company just got acquired.. and then once it got there they had to slap another sticker on it (on the side) to redirect it to the building my BF works at. LOL, thanks Dancer4Ever for waiting! Sorry for the delay in receiving. I should have not listened to the BF and just had it delivered to the apartment!

Look at all the amazing stuff she sent me!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I love it all, especially the Totoro box! I can't wait to use it!

Totoro bento box, gorgeous owl utensil roll with a reusable napkin!, beautiful wooden chopsticks, somen noodles (perfect for summer), furikake, and a lovely spiral notebook with recipes inside! I don't know how she did it but the front of the notebook has a space where she put tiny origami butterflies.

Soda candy, teeny cola gum pieces, Japanese desserts erasers, gummi candies, 3 silicon cups (yay! reusable!), origami stars and crane, mystery wrapped gifts!

Inside the gifts were a foot shaped nori cutter, sushi grass, adorable food picks and wasabi packs. She also sent stickers, Japanese rice snacks with peanuts (really tasty, I'm going to have to find more for camping), and alphabet cutters! The alphabet cutters are just what I wanted too!

Thank you again, Dancer4Ever, for being such a great partner!

9  Re: Bento Swap Round 4 - Signups through 5/1, Send by 6/7 in ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED by Avian Flight on: May 01, 2010 11:37:26 AM
Last day to sign up for the BENTO SWAP! If you like to pack lunches or want to jump into the world of bento then this is your swap!
It would be great to have at least one more swapper so we have an even number.

This is a charaben or kyaraben bento (aka character bento) of Totoro from Miyazaki's film "My Neighbor Totoro". He's accompanied by NekoBus (cat bus) and some soot sprites. Here's the tutorial on how to make Totoro: http://www.annathered.com/2009/01/18/how-to-make-totoro-with-rice/ (her gallery has tons of great charaben).

Partners will be done by tonight.

Yay!!! I'm in!!! I'm soooo excited it's my first swap ever! Ok what next? Let's get going. Haha

welcome! sign-ups are a little long for this swap (until may 1) so nothing you can do now except brainstorm ideas on what you can make. and you can look around town or online for potential bento gear. once you get your partner you can start crafting!

and this applies to anyone, feel free to practice making bento with what you have and posting pics on this thread! i'll post up some pics later today.

i made this for a cherry blossom viewing picnic. my normal bentos are nowhere near this fancy!

sakura flower shaped onigiri (rice ball), miso chicken, roasted potatoes, tamagoyaki (rolled egg), cherry tomatoes, orange slice and grapes. basil leaf for decoration.  Smiley
