1  CLOTHING / Clothing for Kids: Completed Projects / My first attempt at a sundress on: July 31, 2011 07:28:29 PM
I just finished this little sundress for my daughter.  It is my first attempt at clothing...I am fairly pleased with the way it came out.  I am still getting used to sewing a gathered piece, though.

I think it might be a little too big- we'll see in the morning- I made it after she went to bed.

I used a vintage pillowcase for the skirt of the dress.

If you are interested in making this sweet little number, you can find the tutorial at www.lilblueboo.com

2  CLOTHING / Clothing for Kids: Discussion and Questions / Baby Sundress Pattern? on: July 22, 2011 07:07:36 PM
Hi friends-

I am looking for some pattern suggestions...I would like to make a sundress for a baby.  Preferably something sleeveless with a full skirt.  I am picturing white eyelet.

Anyone know of any patterns out there that might fit this description?

Thank you!
3  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / blessingway flag on: July 20, 2011 06:46:31 PM
I made this blessingway flag for my sister-in-law.  She brought it with her to the hospital where it resided in her room while she labored and delivered my beautiful niece.  I thought that "My courage and patience will send my baby into my arms" was a lovely, simple mantra.

After I had begun stitching, I realized that I should have used three threads to embroider as opposed to six as the words would have turned out clearer.  I'm new at embroidery, so I'm giving myself a little wiggle room on this one- this time, that is.   Wink

I freehand drew the pattern and I would like to tweak it a little for the next time.

Thanks for taking a look.   Smiley
4  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / a "tweet" little mobile on: July 10, 2011 09:19:09 AM
I finally finished the mobile for my daughter.  She currently has a musical, moving mobile above her crib, so I made her this one for above her changing table.  She seems to love it- she babbles and "chats" with the birds.   Wink

For the foundation of the mobile I used a branch from a Japanese Maple, as I did in the mobile I made for my niece.  I just love the structure of the branches.

I used Sparkle Mod Podge to add some interest to the branch.

The birds are made of craft felt.  I freehand drew a pattern for them.  The birds' wings are attached with a blanket stitch.  I used a blanket stitch to assemble the birds also.  Just a little french knot for the eyes and some embroidery for a little embellishment.

As for the hanging balls, I hand felted those using the needle felting technique.  I used domestic carded wool for the base (The wool smells delightfully of animal and earth.  As it is unprocessed and unaltered, merely carded, it maintains it's organic scent.  So fantastic!)    Some of the balls I left solid- others I felted designs onto- polka dots, squiggles, what-have-you.

I am going to add a few more metal doodads to catch the light.

I especially love how happy it is, and how it isn't "babyish"...not only will it grow with her, but someday if she thinks she is too cool for it, I can hang it in our common living space.   Cheesy

Thanks for taking a look!

5  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Happy Crowns on: July 01, 2011 08:28:51 PM
I made these crowns for my niece Charlie and three of her little friends who all turned 2 withing 2 weeks of one another.  They had a joint birthday party in the park and I thought the crowns would be a fun addition to the celebration.  (I know that one of the crowns isn't lined up properly and it is driving me NUTS.  My husband kindly tells me that nothing handmade is perfect and that I need to let it go, but golly, stuff like that bugs me.)

The crowns are sewn, embroidered and/or felted.  There is a piece of elastic covered in fabric on the back, so one size fits all.  I also put a stabilizer between the layers and some heat n' bond to help fuse it all together before stitching it.

This is the crown I am working on now, for Rowan who is turning 4.  I made the doodads with Sculpey clay, and I felted the little colorful circles.  I think it needs a little something more, so I will work on that in the morning before his mother comes to pick it up.

I especially like this little alien guy.  Don't really know who/what he is, but I dig him...

Happy, happy, they make me happy!

Thanks for taking a lookie-look.   Wink
6  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Mod Dolly For My Groovy 5 Month Old on: June 29, 2011 08:09:14 PM
I made this doll for my daughter.  She was so much fun to make!  I am going to make one for each of my nieces also.  I love how totally mod she looks...so hip!

Oh, it should be said that I brought her to life but I did not create her...I used a pattern by Kim Kruzich.

Now to think of a name...   Smiley
7  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Baby Aven's Family Mobile on: June 29, 2011 07:42:48 PM
I made this mobile for my baby niece, Aven.  Considering she was born just this morning, I figured it would only be fitting to share it today.

Here it is in her beautiful room:

I used a branch from a Japanese Maple in our yard.  I spray painted it with a light layer of glitter to add interest for the baby.
The main focus of this piece are the discs.  I bought simple wooden discs, painted them black, and sandwiched ribbon between them.  I then added family photos (they are double-sided) and shellacked them with Mod Podge.

The photo rounds are highlighted by black and white painted wooden spheres and metal doodads.  The crystal fleur de lis is a nod to my brother-in-law who is a history buff.

I assembled the mobile over my daughter's crib and she enjoyed it for the weeks leading up to the shower...I quickly had to begin working on one for her as she missed her focal point after it was gone.   Wink

I wish I had better photos...it really turned out lovely.  Don't know if that is conveyed in these photographs.   Huh
8  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / gift ideas for mamas celebration? on: June 23, 2011 04:37:47 AM
Four ladies and I became friends a year ago this July.  At the time we were all pregnant with our first babies and we came together to share the journey of pregnancy and now motherhood.

We get together at least once a month with the babies, and this July we are celebrating our mamaversary without the little ones.

I organized the group, so I am looking to mark our year's mamaversary with a special gift for each mama.

I have many thoughts swirling in my head but I am looking for any ideas/suggestions.  So far, my skeletal thoughts are creating something with:

images of mother/child
the color of the birthstone of the child
monograms/initial of child

I sew and make jewelry....and pretty much anything I can get my grubby little paws on.

Thoughts?

Thanks so much!
