1  CLOTHING / Costumes: Discussion and Questions / how do I? on: October 20, 2011 09:07:46 AM
Hey costumers!  I'm looking for a tutorial or something on how to make one of those victorian overskirts that are a semicircular gathered bib with a bustle in back.

Kind like the front of the first one on this page but i want it to hang lower in front and a different bustle:  http://www.demifashions.com/catalog/demipatterns.html

the only thing I can figure is to basically make a whole top skirt and then just tuck it up and gather it in the back for the bustle?

basically, what I'm doing is retooling the alice dress i made for my daughter into a victorian little girls dress for "Christmas Carol."  I got a darker calico and then a solid darker blue to do a ruffle and I thought that shape would work well with the alice dress and tone down the light blue.  I'm also changing the sleeves and adding lace and buttons etc to the top of the dress but that's another matter entirely.

Any help would be appreciated.
2  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Rapunzel and Fairy girly costumes on: September 30, 2011 04:32:28 AM
Rapunzel (prior to tangled coming out)

I made the dress from modifying a mccalls pattern.  The wig was a grown ups rapunzel wig that i unbraided, tightened and then rebraided to give her that floor length hair.

Fairy

I used the tutu i made for the angelina ballerina costume and made the petal bodice to go over it so the costume could be worn over a shirt or a coat.  There was no pattern for the bodice.
3  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Story Book Day (Angelina Ballerina Costume) on: September 29, 2011 05:02:41 AM
In kindergarten my daughter had a storybook character dress up day.  She was Angelina Ballerina.

I bought the leotard but made the tutu and the ears.  She also had a white felt tail hanging out from under her tutu.
4  CLOTHING / Costumes: Completed Projects / Costume (Alice in wonderland Jr.) on: September 29, 2011 04:58:07 AM
my daughter was in Alice in Wonderland Jr at our community theater over the summer and I made her dress.  I used the mccalls alice dress pattern but modified it.  I made the pinafore without a pattern.

I made a full petticoat under the skirt and the skirt moved so nicely on stage!
5  CLOTHING / Costumes: Discussion and Questions / Garb for summer ren wedding on: June 17, 2011 07:53:07 AM
Friends of ours are getting married in august and they are having a renaissance themed wedding.  My hubby is in the wedding so he will be in boots, a puffy shirt and a vest i guess.  The couple said that the guests don't have to dress up but they'd love it if they did.  Of course, I was planning on taking our daughter to a ren fest in september anyway (first time for both of us) so this just gives me more reason to make costumes!  But I'm wondering if anyone has any links to summer dresses for women or children.  Or was everything always long sleeved and layered?  I'm thinking that I'll make our chemises out of the lightest white cotton that i can get and maybe make the sleeves elbow length instead of wrist.  But then what for the gowns?  Any suggestions for patterns or fabrics or inspiration pics are welcome. I don't want to cook in my dress but I also don't want to be totally historically inaccurate. lol.
