1  Possible Monster/Soft Toy Collective in the Calgary Area in Alberta by pleat on: July 20, 2004 05:22:09 PM
So, during the last year or so I've become involved with creating soft toys. Recently, I've really gotten into it, creating little monsters and animals from recycled fabrics and fleece. Then I got to thinking: How great would it be to form a collective of creative likeminded people who love making soft toys? We could meet every once in a while, discuss design ideas and share our current creations. And, if we become organized enough and create a lot of monsters, we could even exhibit them all together in a group show.

It's so easy to hide away in your own studio and forget the importance of being around other creative individuals. Collaborating is possibly the best creation process around but sometimes we're too shy to jump out and meet people. So, I propose a Monster/Soft Toy Collective for the Calgary area. If you're at all interested, leave a message here. Maybe we can get something started that could have the opportunity to be really great!

Here are some examples of monsters I have made:

Oh- and if you were wondering, here is some information about me:

I'm a young immerging artist currently enrolled in my third year at ACAD where I major in Fibre and Textiles. I love creating things. My work varies from soft toys, to quilting, to silkscreen printing, to cloth dyeing, to felting, to weaving and cloth construction. I also enjoy collecting things, taking photos, and drinking good beer.

Anyway, I'm very eager to start something like this here in Calgary. If you think you'd be at all interested, please let me know and we can start planning our first meeting!

2  Re: pretty in pink! in Clothing: Completed Projects: General by pleat on: May 12, 2004 03:41:16 PM
Thanks guys/gals!

Here's an image of the first dress I made. It's from the same pattern only it's strapless.

I dyed the fabric red (it was originally white) and then silkscreen printed the fabric (three layers of printing ranging from fibre reactive dyes to discharge printing to pigment). As I mentioned before, silkscreen printing is where my heart lies.. sewing is something I'm learning to become better at.

Here's another image of me wearing the dress while standing in an installation I did displaying all of the fabric I printed between Feburary and April 2004. This is an excerpt. There is more of the installation that isn't shown.

3  Re:Simple Lined Messenger-Style Purse in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by pleat on: January 06, 2004 05:20:05 PM
I just recently finished my first messenger bag. I could barely get the detailing finished before my machine decided to crap out on me (it needs to be serviced, silly thing). Anyway, here are some pictures!

I'm going to do up a tutorial for this eventually since trying to describe it in just words is a little hard. If you're a visual person like me, you need photos too!
